Greenland Winter Adventure

6 days around Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq

Grab a few extra days off and jump on the plane to Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq in Greenland, only a 4½ hours flight from Copenhagen Airport in Denmark. This 6-day journey begins in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. Nuuk is a modern Arctic city filled with culture, history, scenic boat trips, and stunning nature. There’s plenty to experience both in the city center and in the beautiful fjords surrounding Nuuk.

The next stop is Kangerlussuaq. Enjoy and explore northern lights, dog sledding, and the Greenland Ice Sheet! In the area around Kangerlussuaq, you will find lots of amazing experiences: The woolly musk oxen, lots of sled dogs and breath-taking mountains. Step onto the Greenland Ice Sheet, and look forward to seeing northern lights dance in the sky.

This is the perfect winter break!

Day program

Rebecca Gustafsson - Visit Greenland
Day 1:
Flight Copenhagen - Nuuk and welcome meeting and dinner. Optional fjord adventure.

We fly from Copenhagen to Nuuk. Ahead awaits a 4,5-hour flight and an 6-day winter adventure.

After you check in at Hotel SØMA, the guide will hold an information meeting. At the meeting, you’ll get information about experiences in Nuuk, dining, and excursion options, and can confirm the excursions you’ve already booked from home. It is also possible to book excursions at the meeting.

After the meeting, it’s time to get to know Nuuk at your own pace and get ideas for what to do today and tomorrow.

Nuuk has only 19,500 inhabitants, but you’ll experience a vibrant “big city” as it is a government city with many cultural and educational institutions. Nuuk is growing constantly and is now about 10 kilometers from end to end. You’ll find concerts, theater, museums, and exhibitions. Sports are central to many, so you can go hiking, skiing, sailing, running, strength training, yoga, and even swimming. Since it’s winter, the ski lift is a favorite spot for the city’s citizens.

You can read more about Nuuk here.

If you’ve purchased the excursion package, it’s time for a boat trip on Nuuk Fjord.

Fjord adventure (optional)

You’ll soon experience Greenland from the sea. It’s a wonderful boat trip, and we’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the views of some of the most beautiful mountains in the Nuuk Fjord.

We sail out of Nuuk and into the large fjord system, the second largest in the world. The mountains in the Nuuk Fjord are beautiful and rugged, many towering above the sea. On our way into the fjord, we sail past the city of Nuuk itself, and from the water, you get a sense of how big Nuuk really is.

We may also pass some beautiful icebergs. In the Nuuk area, they are not as big as in Disko Bay, but they are still beautiful and impressive.

After enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, we sail on, and, who knows, we might be lucky enough to see some wildlife. Out here in the fjord, we’re also closer to Sermitsiaq, the beautiful mountain that is one of Nuuk’s most famous landmarks.

At night, we will have have a welcome dinner at the hotel (drinks excluded).

Day 2:
Flight to Kangerlussuaq. Sightseeing. Optional northern lights excursion.

After today’s breakfast, it’s time to fly northwards to Kangerlussuaq. Kangerlussuaq is beautifully situated between gentle mountains and close to the Inland Ice Cap. It is the only place in Greenland where you can easily experience both reindeer and musk oxen up close.

After about an hour’s flight, you’ll land in Kangerlussuaq, greeted by a blast of crisp Arctic air. A guide from our local excursion office will meet you upon arrival and assist with check-in at Hotel Kangerlussuaq, which will serve as our base for the coming days of adventure. After check-in, there will be a welcome meeting where you’ll receive practical information and learn more about Kangerlussuaq, the surrounding area, and the excursions available.

Sightseeing in Kangerlussuaq

This tour provides a great overview of the area, starting from the airport in the town center and moving out into the stunning surrounding nature. We’ll hear about the area’s long history, from its origins as an Inuit hunting ground and a former American military base to its transformation into a Greenlandic settlement. Kangerlussuaq once served as Greenland’s central airport, a hub for travelers arriving from Denmark before heading to towns along Greenland’s coast.

The rest of the day is yours to explore independently, or you can join a northern lights tour at night.

Northern Lights Tour (part of the excursion package)

Don’t miss the chance to witness Greenland’s most stunning northern lights in the evening. Kangerlussuaq is one of the best places in Greenland to see the aurora borealis due to its very stable climate. We strongly recommend joining this tour. We’ll drive from the base into the evening darkness, hoping to see the incredible northern lights. Watching the shimmering, greenish light dancing across the sky is an unforgettable experience, adding another remarkable memory to your growing collection of impressions from Greenland.

Day 3:
Kangerlussuaq on your own or optional tundra safari

Today, you can explore the area on your own or go on an excursion.

Tundra Safari (part of the excursion package)

On this trip, we venture into Greenland’s tundra landscape. Accompanied by a local guide, we embark on an exciting safari through Kangerlussuaq’s vast and rugged nature. There are excellent opportunities to spot musk oxen, reindeer, and perhaps even an Arctic hare. The tundra’s flora and fauna are fascinating and perfectly adapted to the extreme climate. Our guide will share insights into this unique ecosystem and tell stories about Greenland’s wildlife. This day of extraordinary nature experiences brings you close to Kangerlussuaq’s diverse and wild animal life.

Day 4:
Kangerlussuaq on your own or optional excursion to the Ice Sheet

Today, you’re on your own, or you can join a tour of the inland ice at Point 660.

The Kangerlussuaq area is the only inhabited place not on Greenland’s coast but in Greenland’s interior. It has a continental climate with very stable weather conditions.

Ice Sheet Point 660 (part of the excursion package)

If you have purchased the excursion package, today you will go on an excursion to the Ice Sheet and the so-called Point 660, where you can get right up and walk on the Inland Ice. The tour goes by special vehicle from the town and approximately 25 km to the ice sheet. The guide will tell you about the ice and the dynamic moraine landscape, and you will have the unique opportunity to stand with many meters of thick and very old ice under your feet!

Be aware that ice is a living entity, so where you step onto the ice can vary from year to year – and sometimes the ice is easily accessible, while other times it’s a little harder to get onto it. But you can rest assured that we move around in safe places.

Day 5:
Kangerlussuaq on your own or an optional dogsledding experience

Today, you have the option to join a dogsled tour if you have purchased the excursion package. Otherwise, there are many opportunities for hiking in the area, or you can simply relax with a good book in the hotel’s lounge area.

2-hour dogsled tour (optional add-on)
Today you can take part in a two-hour dogsled tour, dressed in traditional sealskin clothing. It is a truly special experience to ride across the frozen fjord. The goal is simply to find your balance, lean back, and enjoy the surrounding nature and fresh air while wearing your sealskin suit. Be sure to keep your camera within easy reach.

It is possible to extend the tour to four hours upon arrival, subject to weather conditions, wind, and availability. However, the latter is rarely a problem on these tours.
