Adventures at the Arctic Circle and the Eternity Fjord

8 days around Kangerlussuaq, the Eternity Fjord and Sisimiut

Experience Greenland at its most beautiful summer side – in Kangerlussuaq, the gateway to the Ice Sheet, at the Eternity Fjord, and in Sisimiut. Here, bright summer days and nights await, along with countless activities and breathtaking scenery found only in Greenland.

Kangerlussuaq

Kangerlussuaq lies north of the Arctic Circle, and with your first breath, you can already feel that something is different. The air is dry and crisp, and in the hinterland, you find the mighty Ice Sheet. During your flight, you’ve had a view of the vast white expanse from above – and now you stand just 25 kilometers away from it.

Here in Kangerlussuaq, you’ll have three days to experience the Ice Sheet and the surrounding tundra in a variety of ways. You can explore on your own or choose one of the three exciting excursion packages we’ve designed for you. Each offers a great opportunity to discover the nature and the Ice Sheet up close!

The Eternity Fjord

After three eventful days in Kangerlussuaq, you’ll reach one of the highlights of the journey: a voyage through the 180-kilometer-long Kangerlussuaq Fjord and then a little further south to the spectacularly beautiful Eternity Fjord. The fjord has long fascinated visitors with its great length, the three distinct bends along its course, and the magnificent glaciers from the Ice Sheet that flow directly into it. The fascination only grew after Kim Leine’s bestselling novel The Prophets of the Eternity Fjord.

Sisimiut

Next, you’ll continue to Sisimiut, Greenland’s second-largest town, often called the country’s adventure capital. There’s always something happening here!

Your days in Sisimiut include sightseeing, encounters with Inuit culture, a mountain safari by ATV or UTV, and a scenic hike in the surrounding hills with lunch at Kisaq Lodge. All excursions in Sisimiut are included in the price, as well as four dinners!

The three excursion packages in Kangerlussuaq

All excursions take place by vehicle, making them suitable for everyone. Additionally, this package includes a meal plan featuring lunches and dinners.

The second package offers a full-day adventure on the Ice Sheet plus a guided hike to Garnet Mountain. As with the previous package, a sightseeing tour and meal plan are included. Minimum age for this package is 10 years.

Day program

Adam Lyberth - Visit Greenland
Day 1:
Flight from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq and Sightseeing

Your journey begins with a beautiful flight from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, as Greenland’s vast white expanses and Arctic landscape slowly unfold outside your window. The flight takes about four and a half hours, but the time passes quickly as you look forward to the days ahead.

Upon arrival in Kangerlussuaq, you immediately sense Greenland’s special summer atmosphere: the fresh air, the open tundra landscape, and the calm pace of life unique to this part of the world. Your local guide will greet you warmly at the airport and provide a good introduction to the area and the upcoming program.

You’ll stay at Hotel Kangerlussuaq, whose cozy pioneer charm and mountain views make it the perfect base for your stay.

A welcome meeting will be held to review the activities planned for the next few days. Afterward, it’s time for sightseeing, if you have purchased one of the excursion packages.

Sightseeing in Kangerlussuaq (part of all three excursion packages)

This tour introduces you to the area’s fascinating history and present-day life. You’ll learn how Kangerlussuaq has been intermittently inhabited for thousands of years and now lies near a UNESCO World Heritage area. The settlement itself began as an American military base during World War II and later became one of Greenland’s most important transportation hubs – and a gateway to magnificent natural experiences.

Since 2024, Nuuk has become Greenland’s new transportation center, so Kangerlussuaq is now quieter. We’ll drive to scenic viewpoints framed by surrounding mountains.
With a bit of luck, we may spot musk oxen grazing in the distance or reindeer moving in herds across the tundra in search of fresh vegetation. There’s time to enjoy the peace of nature and capture photos of the spectacular scenery.

In the evening, enjoy a delicious two-course dinner at the hotel’s Musk Ox Restaurant (drinks not included).

Day 2:
On Your Own or Excursions to the Ice Sheet (optional)

The day begins with a hearty breakfast, after which you can spend the day as you wish. You may explore the beautiful area on your own, or – if you’ve purchased an excursion and meal package – choose from three exciting options, all centered around the Ice Sheet.

Excursion to Point 660 (Part of the Light Excursion Package)

If you’ve chosen the Light Package, a truly unforgettable experience awaits – a visit to the Ice Sheet!

We travel by four-wheel-drive vehicle across the vast plains, where the open landscape impresses with its scale and raw beauty. The gravel road winds upward, and the closer we get to the Ice Sheet, the more magnificent the view becomes. Along the way, your guide shares fascinating stories about the formation of the ice and its importance to the global climate.

At Point 660, one of the most accessible places to reach the Ice Sheet, we step out and suddenly stand face-to-face with the immense white giant stretching toward the horizon. The silence, the size, and the crystal-clear air create a feeling of awe that’s hard to describe.

You’ll have time for a short walk on the ice, to hear it crunch beneath your feet, take photos, and absorb the moment. After the visit, we return to Kangerlussuaq, where the rest of the afternoon is at your leisure.

If you’ve booked the Adventure Package, you’ll join the same tour – but with an additional four hours to explore the Ice Sheet more deeply.

Full-Day Adventure on the Ice Sheet (Part of the Adventure Package)

This tour follows the Ice Sheet – Point 660 itinerary but includes about four hours to explore the ice in greater depth.

Most visitors only venture a few hundred meters onto the Ice Sheet, but going farther reveals a breathtaking landscape of valleys, ridges, crystal-blue streams, rivers, waterfalls, and meltwater lakes. With crampons and trekking poles, everyone can participate – it’s no more demanding than hiking in moderately hilly terrain.

We’ll find a scenic spot on the ice to enjoy lunch and drink pure meltwater straight from a glacial pond. The drive to and from the Ice Sheet passes through beautiful terrain, offering opportunities to spot reindeer, musk oxen, and Arctic birds and plants.

Remember to bring a warm jacket and sturdy hiking boots.

Please note: Children must be at least 10 years old to join this excursion.

Overnight Stay on the Ice Sheet (Part of the Expedition Package)

Those who’ve chosen the Expedition Package are in for a true Arctic adventure – an overnight stay on the Ice Sheet at Camp Ice Cap.

Your local guide from our partner Albatros Arctic Circle will first brief you on the next 25–30 hours of experiences. Then your adventure begins – a full day and night on the Ice Sheet, staying in expedition tents directly on the ice.

You can leave most of your luggage in your room and bring only a smaller backpack for the trip. We recommend packing accordingly before departure.

The journey begins in a rugged all-terrain vehicle with large panoramic windows, allowing you to enjoy the changing landscape along the way. After about an hour, we reach Point 660, where your guide reviews the equipment and plans for the upcoming day.

Kangerlussuaq’s climate is generally stable, and the route across the ice is relatively smooth. Your guide is highly experienced in glacier travel. Upon arrival at Camp Ice Cap, you’ll settle into your expedition tents. There’s time to enjoy a hot drink and take in the deep silence that surrounds you. If the weather allows, you may even take a short walk and experience this winter landscape under the summer sun.

Dinner is simple but warming – freeze-dried meals that are easy to carry and perfectly suited for this Arctic environment. During summer, the sun stays up late; some guests relax and chat, while others turn in early. Because of the three-hour time difference, when it’s 9 p.m. in Greenland, it’s already midnight back in Denmark. The tents are equipped with warm thermal sleeping bags, so you won’t have to worry about getting cold during the night.

Day 3:
On Your Own or Excursion to Russell Glacier, Garnet Mountain, or a Second Day on the Ice Sheet (optional)

After another hearty breakfast, it’s time for another day of adventure and unique wildlife experiences – especially if you’ve purchased an excursion package. If you’d rather explore Kangerlussuaq on your own, we recommend renting a bicycle to get around quickly and easily.

Excursion to the Majestic Russell Glacier (Part of the Light Excursion Package)

We set out in sturdy four-wheel-drive vehicles across the vast tundra. The route winds through wide valleys, small streams, and open grasslands where silence is broken only by birdsong and the whispering wind. Your guide shares fascinating insights into the tundra’s fragile ecosystem and the unique flora and fauna found only in the Arctic.

Today’s program features one of Greenland’s most spectacular natural sights – the Russell Glacier. After breakfast, we head out by 4×4, slowly traveling through the varied landscape of tundra plains, small rivers, and gravel hills.

Your guide explains how glaciers have shaped Greenland’s landscape for millions of years and continue to play a vital role in the Arctic ecosystem. As we arrive, an awe-inspiring sight unfolds – the massive ice wall rising high above the land, a striking contrast to the green tundra around it. The clear light makes the ice glow in shades of blue and white, and if you listen carefully, you can hear the cracking and rumbling of the moving glacier.

We spend time near the glacier taking photos, asking questions, and simply absorbing the view. With luck, we might even witness a calving event, when large chunks of ice break off and crash down with a thunderous roar – a powerful reminder of nature’s raw beauty.

Afterward, we may take a short walk in the area before returning to Kangerlussuaq in the late afternoon.

8-Hour Hike to Garnet Mountain (Part of the Adventure Package)

Those who’ve chosen the Adventure Package will spend the day on a scenic hike through Kangerlussuaq’s vast backcountry – where fragrant plants, vivid colors, and untamed nature embody the essence of a Greenlandic summer.

We begin with a drive to the top of Tacan Mountain, shaped during the last Ice Age, offering spectacular views. From there, we follow the trail around Great Salt Lake. The route is mostly downhill, with a few moderate climbs along the way.

After about 2½ to 3 hours, we reach Garnet Mountain, where we search for the beautiful semi-precious stones, hammer and chisel in hand. Along the way, we enjoy a packed lunch and may spot peregrine falcons or musk oxen in the area.

Our hike continues along the shore of Lake Ferguson, where we hope to see the majestic red-throated loon and hear its distinctive call. The tour ends at the far end of the lake, where we are picked up and driven back to Kangerlussuaq.

Second Day at Camp Ice Cap (Part of the Expedition Package)

For those who ventured onto the Ice Sheet yesterday, the day begins deep within this extraordinary frozen world. After a restful night in warm sleeping bags and a nourishing breakfast, we set out on a slightly longer hike than the day before.

Equipped with crampons and trekking poles – but without ropes, as the terrain is safe – we explore the vast icy expanse. In the distance, crevasses hint at the ice’s constant summer movement, while turquoise meltwater lakes and streams glimmer in the sunlight.

Depending on the weather, we’ll enjoy our packed lunch either en route or back at camp. Then it’s time to pack up and return toward civilization.

This journey begins with one of Greenland’s ultimate experiences – walking on the Ice Sheet itself, something few travelers ever do. Back in Kangerlussuaq, you’ll find a grocery store, a small gear shop, and a few stores selling local art, crafts, and souvenirs. The rest of the day is at your leisure to relax or take a stroll in the surrounding area.

Day 4:
Boat Trip through Kangerlussuaq Fjord to the Eternity Fjord and on to Sisimiut

After breakfast, it’s time for a long and beautiful voyage. As the boat departs Kangerlussuaq, you set out on an unforgettable journey through the 180-kilometer-long Kangerlussuaq Fjord – an experience in itself. When the trip from the Ice Sheet to Greenland’s open west coast comes to an end, the boat turns south into a dramatic landscape that many consider a highlight of the entire journey.

The Eternity Fjord – One of Greenland’s Most Iconic Fjords

Here you enter a world of blue ice, dark cliffs, and green valleys, where every bay seems untouched by time.

The voyage winds its way deep between towering mountains that rise hundreds of meters above the water. Waterfalls cascade down the rock faces, and small pieces of ice drift silently by – gentle reminders of the glaciers that reach the fjord. If the weather allows, enjoy lunch on deck while watching the glacier tongues sliding slowly down toward the water.

It’s easy to understand why this fjord earned its poetic name, the Eternity Fjord – for here, nature feels endless, pristine, and eternal. The fjord twists and turns so much that just when you think you’ve reached its end, another bend appears ahead.

Along the way, there are good chances of spotting seals, seabirds, and perhaps even a whale or two. The skipper will gladly share stories about the area and the mountains that generations of Greenlandic hunters have called their backyard.

After the visit to the fjord, the boat heads out into open waters, where you can feel the waves of the Davis Strait as the course is set toward Sisimiut.

Arrival in Sisimiut and Dinner

Arriving in the evening, you’ll be transferred to Hotel Sisimiut, where a late, warm dinner awaits (drinks not included). A quiet sense of calm settles in after a day surrounded by vast wilderness.

From the hotel windows, you can look out over the town and the mountains beyond – a perfect and atmospheric ending to a day full of impressions.

Day 5:
Sightseeing in Sisimiut

After breakfast, it’s time to get to know Sisimiut – a town that beautifully blends modern Greenland with traditional hunting culture. Sisimiut is Greenland’s second-largest town, yet it remains compact and welcoming, surrounded by mountains, lakes, and the open sea. Approximately 5,500 people reside here, and the town serves as a vital hub for trade, education, and culture in the region.

On the hotel’s sightseeing tour by bus, you’ll gain a vivid impression of the town’s history and its modern-day life. The tour passes through colorful neighborhoods, past the harbor, the fish factory, and the museum, where old tools and kayaks tell the story of Greenland’s hunting traditions. You’ll see how sled dogs, snowmobiles, and modern cars coexist side by side in everyday life.

One of today’s highlights is a visit to Aanaa’s House – a small turf hut in the middle of town where time seems to stand still. Here, you’ll get a rare glimpse into how life in Sisimiut looked just a few generations ago: without electricity, lit by oil lamps, and with a small hearth as the heart of the home. The house tells a story of Greenlandic resilience and adaptation in a harsh climate – and you can almost feel the warmth of the people who once lived here.

After the guided visit, the afternoon is at your leisure. You can explore the town on your own, enjoy a coffee at the Taseralik Cultural Center, browse local arts and crafts, or follow a trail up the mountain behind the town for panoramic views over the Davis Strait.

In the evening, dinner is served at the hotel (drinks not included), offering a chance to share the day’s impressions with your fellow travelers.

Hotel Sisimiut
Day 6:
Mountain Safari in the Backcountry by ATV

Today is all about adventure. After breakfast, you’ll meet your guide, who welcomes you and introduces the day’s program – a mountain safari by ATV into the wild and magnificent backcountry behind Sisimiut. There’s plenty of time for a thorough safety briefing so everyone feels comfortable before the engines roar to life and the adventure begins.

The route starts gently as you leave the town and pass through the sled dog area. Here, the dogs stand in rows outside their small kennels, their barking blending with the sound of the engines. Soon, the town disappears behind you, and the landscape opens up – vast, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful. Mountains, lakes, and green meadows create a mosaic of colors that shift with the changing light.

After a gradual climb, you reach the Nasaasaaq Valley, a long and dramatic valley framed by steep mountain walls and dominated by the striking Nasaasaaq peak towering over Sisimiut. Here, you follow part of the Arctic Circle Trail, the legendary hiking route connecting Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq. Along the way, your guide shares insights about the area’s geology, flora, and fauna – and perhaps stories about local youth who come here in winter for daring snowmobile rides.

Later, you’ll take a short walk to a beautiful waterfall that cascades straight down the rock face. The water is crystal clear – you can fill your bottle and take a sip of some of the purest meltwater in the world. The journey then continues upward to a scenic viewpoint offering a panoramic vista over the Nasaasaaq Valley. Here, you’ll enjoy a small refreshment while soaking in the silence and vastness around you.

On the return trip, the landscape once again opens up, revealing sweeping views of mountains, lakes, and the distant sea. Before heading back to town, there will be a few brief stops to take photos and savor the final moments in Greenland’s backcountry – a day that lets you feel both the power and the peace of nature.

If you’d like to experience the thrill of driving an ATV yourself, you’ll need a valid driver’s license. If you don’t have one, don’t worry – you can ride as a passenger with one of the other participants. It’s easily arranged on the day of the tour. Get ready for an adventure that combines speed, stunning scenery, and cultural discovery – an experience tailor-made for you in the heart of Greenland!

Spa

After a day filled with outdoor adventures, there’s no better way to unwind than sinking into the warm outdoor hot tubs at Hotel Sisimiut. Under the open Arctic sky, you can let the day’s impressions settle as steam rises and the fatigue slowly fades away.

The spa area overlooks the mountains and the town – a peaceful spot where you can feel the contrast between the hot water and the crisp Arctic air. The hotel’s spa also features a sauna and a relaxation area, offering your body the warmth and calm it deserves after an active day.

In the evening, dinner is served at the hotel (drinks not included).

Day 7:
Hike and Lunch at Kisaq Lodge

After breakfast, a day of fresh air, nature, and Greenlandic hospitality awaits. The trip leads through the mountainous terrain east of Sisimiut, where the road winds upward between cliffs and lakes. Along the way, you can see how ice and water have shaped the land over thousands of years into soft valleys and sharp peaks. Your guide shares stories about the local nature, plants, and wildlife as you make your way toward today’s destination: Kisaq Lodge.

The lodge sits beautifully at the foot of Kangerluarsunnguaq, surrounded by mountains and with views toward the sea. Here, silence reigns – broken only by the whisper of the wind and the calls of birds. On the terrace or in the cozy dining room, preparations are made for a Greenlandic-style lunch. Together with your hosts, the meal is cooked over an open fire – often featuring musk ox, reindeer, or freshly caught fish, accompanied by vegetables and homemade bread. You’re welcome to join in the cooking or enjoy the aroma and atmosphere as the fire crackles.

After the meal, there’s time to explore the area around the lodge. You can follow small trails, look for traces of ancient settlements, or perhaps find whale bones – silent witnesses to the area’s history as a hunting ground. In summer, the tundra blooms in every color, and in the clear light, the mountains seem almost to glow. In winter, the small river turns into a frozen cascade, and if darkness falls early, you might be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights dancing in the sky before returning to Sisimiut.

Back at the hotel, the hot tubs await, along with one last delightful dinner (drinks not included).

Day 8:
Flight from Sisimiut to Kangerlussuaq and onward to Denmark

Your final morning in Greenland begins with one last breakfast. Use the early hours to enjoy the peace and perhaps take a short walk in the nearby surroundings. The clear air, the open landscape, and the deep silence will, for many, feel like a soothing balm for the soul.

Before departure, you’ll also have the chance to meet Greenland’s sled dogs.

Greenlandic Sled Dogs

Get close to one of Greenland’s most iconic figures – the sled dog. For centuries, these dogs have been indispensable for hunting, transport, and survival in the Arctic. In Sisimiut, where dog sledding is still actively practiced in winter, you’ll gain a unique insight into how these strong animals continue to play an important role in everyday life.

Your guide shares stories about the close bond between humans and dogs – and how traditions are upheld even in modern times. You’ll visit an area where the dogs thrive in their natural surroundings, seeing how their thick coats protect them from the cold and why they are not pets, but working animals that live best outdoors.

When conditions allow, you may get close to selected dogs and experience their unique energy and personality – always with respect for both humans and animals.

Flight to Kangerlussuaq and Onward to Denmark

The flight back to Copenhagen passes through Kangerlussuaq, allowing you time to reflect on the many impressions and revisit the highlights of your journey: the vast Ice Sheet, the majestic glaciers, and the long, bright Arctic summer nights.

Upon arrival in Copenhagen, this unforgettable journey comes to an end – but the memories of Greenland’s magnificent landscapes and the special summer atmosphere will stay with you for a long time to come.
