The Original New Year's Eve in Ilulissat in Greenland 2019/2020

New Year’s Eve in Greenland is a unique experience. Not just because of the beautiful fireworks in the polar night, but also because you get to celebrate the New Year twice: At 8:00 PM for Denmark (and other CET countries) and at midnight for Greenland!

Greenland's nature is beautiful all year, not least in the wintertime. It is wonderful when it is covered by a blanket of snow and ice and that creates a myriad of opportunities under the northern lights. In this 5-day trip to Ilulissat, you will experience fireworks, northern lights, sled dogs, huge icebergs, and snow-covered rocks.

We offered this trip for the first time for the New Year of 2017/18, and it was a great success. Our guests loved the unique light you experience even though this is during the polar darkness of winter - and they were very impressed with the fireworks on New Year's Eve.

You will have the opportunity to either plan your Greenland vacation or buy our excursion package where we have collected four must-try experience for you. This involves, among other things, a fantastic boat trip to the huge icebergs at the mouth of Ilulissat lcefjord.

New Year's Eve in Greenland

On December 31, you will attend a gala dinner in the restaurant at Hotel lcefiord. We are invited to enjoy a lovely dinner with good food and entertainment - and some breaks at the right moments, so we can get to go outside to enjoy the fireworks several times during the evening.

Ilulissat lcefjord is UNESCO World Heritage Site

Ilulissat is located at the world famous Ilulissat lcefjord. The Icefjord was admitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Site List in 2004 and that is not a coincidence. The icebergs can tower up to 75 meters into the air and they are a sight you will never forget.

Under the flicker of the northern lights

Everybody loves the northern lights. We know that this sounds pretty boastful; it’s just that we have never met anyone who has not been impressed with the northern lights. When you stand outside on a frosty evening and see the fantastic northern lights moving across the sky, you, too, will be close to tears at seeing something this amazing and beautiful.

It's going to be warm inside

This being midwinter, it's going to be dusk most of the day and dark at night. Inside the hotel, we will have time to enjoy the central heating - and the guide will entertain with small lectures and quizzes about Greenland and we will also have time to play games.

New Year's Eve in Ilulissat in Greenland 2019/2020

We have made the following program description based on our excursion package. This package allows you to get close to the Greenlandic nature via four exciting extra activities. NOTE: The program is not set in stone. You may not get to go dogsledding on the day mentioned, but then you will get to go on another day. This goes for all four experiences in the tour package.

  • Day 1 Flight Copenhagen - Kangerlussuaq - Ilulissat, information meeting and tour of the town

We board Air Greenland's red plane in Copenhagen and fly to Kangerlussuaq in Greenland. It is a trip of 4.5 hours. Ahead of us are five exciting days around New Year’s in Ilulissat but there is still one more flight to get there.

After a stopover in Kangerlussuaq where we change planes, we continue towards Ilulissat. After flying over the wonderful Ilulissat lcefjord, we will land in Ilulissat Airport. You will be picked in Hotel lcefiord’s bus and driven to the cozy hotel which lies by the waterfront of Ilulissat. Here, you will meet a guide from our local tour office "World of Greenland".

After check-in, the guide will organize an information meeting, telling you about the town, the area and possible excursions. You can book excursions at the meeting, and you can also get you excursions verified if you have already booked them from home. Please note that there can be changes in the program. This is due to the fact that the light hours are limited, so we may not get all the people out sailing on the same day, for example, because the boat only takes 12 passengers. But while some people go boating, others will go dogsledding. World of Greenland are experts at logistics like this.

Then it's time for a guided city tour for everybody.

Ilulissat is Greenland's third largest town and considered one of the four main towns along with Nuuk, Qaqortoq and Sisimiut. People have lived in the area surrounding Ilulissat for 4,500 years, but the town itself was established as a village in 1727 and, in 1741, the Icelandic merchant Jacob Severin established the trading post Jacobshavn (Jacob’s Harbour). Later on, the town changed it’s name to Jakobshavn (now with 'k'). You will see many buildings that is linked tothis time. Knud Rasmussen, the world famous polar explorer and researcher, grew up in Ilulissat in the building that now houses the historical museum. Look forward to an exciting tour and get lots of information that you can use in the coming days.

In the evening, a welcome dinner is served at at Hotel lcefiord (excl. drinks).

  • Day 2 Ilulissat on your own (Optional: Hike to Sermermiut and Northern Lights Safari)

There are many things to do in Ilulissat on your own. The guide will have told you all about this on your first day. Today, you can go explore on your own.

If you have chosen to buy our excursion package, today’s program is a hike to the former settlement of Sermermiut and later you will go on a Northern Lights tour.

Hiking to the former Inuit settlement of Sermermiut by the Icefjord

Today, you will hike to the former settlement of Sermermiut that has been inhabited for thousands of years because of its amazing location at the Icefjord. Although the view here is incredulous, it was now the scenery that brought the Inuit here. There are excellent hunting opportunities in the area since The Icefjord provides food for both fish and seals, which in turn has created a basis for human settlements for millenia.

    Northern Lights Safari

When the sky is clear on winter nights you can see the most beautiful Northern Lights over Ilulissat. Aurora Borealis is without a doubt the night sky's most spectacular phenomenon. We are going to drive away from the lights of the town and go to where the darkness is most intense. The guide will tell us all about the causes of the phenomenon. You will also get tips and tricks to enable you to take the best pictures of the colored lights as they cross the night sky. The trip takes 90 minutes and coffee and tea is served.

  • Day 3 Ilulissat on your own (Optional: Dog sledding)

Saturday has come and tonight it's New Year's Eve! However, before we get to the evening's festivities, you will go on a dogsled ride if you bought our excursion package.

    Optional: 2-hour dog sled ride

Today, you can look forward to a 2-hour dog sled ride. The icefiord is an impressive sight, both summer and winter. We ride over the mountain Small Akinnaq and, 7 kilometers ahead, we reach the great vantage point. The trip takes place in a hilly mountain terrain, and you will see the dogs both in front of and behind the dog sled. The reason for this is that they not only pull the sled but also act as brakes when the tracks take us somewhat steeply downwards. There are two people on the dog sled besides the driver.

    Gala Dinner at Hotel Icefiord

The New Year is now fast approaching and tonight you will attend the gala dinner at the Hotel lcefiord. It's a five-course dinner. There will be a break at 20.00 o'clock because, at that time, almost the entire population of Greenland go outside and celebrates the CET New Year and send up fireworks in honor of all their friends and family in Denmark (there are about 15,000 Greenlanders living in Denmark and numerous people who have lived in Greenland).

After this, you go back to the dinner table and the entertainment. When the clock strikes midnights, it's out in the snow again, this time to celebrate the 'real' New Year. Then you go back in and get a glass of bubbles. When you want the night to end is totally up to you…

info For more than a thousand years, the dog sled has been used in the wintertime.
  • Day 4 Ilulissat on your own (Optional: Boat trip to the Icefjord)

You have the morning of January 1st on your own. After this, it’s time for a boat trip if you have bought the excursion package.

The Disko Bay is Greenland's most popular tourist destination. This is especially because of the ice, but also because the place holds its own special beauty and many cultural attractions. One of the great gems in the area - and certainly the most famous - is Ilulissat lcefjord.

    Optional: Sailing to Ilulissat Icefjord

You will start the year with one of your life's highlights, a trip to the mouth of Ilulissat Icefjord.  You will sail around or by some of the huge icebergs that are stranded here. At the mouth of the Icefjord, through the millennia, icebergs have pushed a sandbar forward and now the enormous icebergs get stuck here. When the pressure from behind gets too high because of new icebergs being produces in the fjord, or because some of the big icebergs melt in the summer, the icebergs finally pass the sandbar and float out into the Disko Bay.

info Today, you have the option of a sailing trip to the mouth of the Icefjord.
  • Day 5 Flight from Ilulissat via Kangerlussuaq to Copenhagen

Today, we head back towards Denmark. With one of Air Greenland's Dash 8’s, you leave Ilulissat Airport for Kangerlussuaq and then fly on to Copenhagen, where you will arrive in the evening.
