NEW! Luxurious mini break: Adventurous stay in the settlement Ilimanaq

This trip to Ilimanaq is ideal for you who want to experience the tranquil life of a Greenlandic settlement in beautiful and luxurious surroundings. This 4-day trip to Greenland's newest luxury homes in Ilimanaq Lodge is ideal for you who want to enjoy one of the most beautiful places Greenland has to offer without spending too much time away from home.

Ilimanaq Lodge consists of 15 luxury cottages, all located on the cliffs overlooking the Disko Bay and Ilulissat Ice Fjord. The latter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each cottage has a nice, large balcony, is built in two planes and has a private bathroom and toilet. Ilimanaq Lodge is about sustainability, ecology and responsible tourism where the locals are not overwhelmed by too many visitors.

Ilimanaq is home to several of the oldest buildings of the colonial era in Greenland. Furthermore, it is also known for the fine trout caught in the Tasiusaq area behind the village. Two of the old buildings in the village are restored and serve as reception, shop, museum, restaurant and conference center for Ilimanaq Lodge.

On this trip, you will experience the village, but you also get the opportunity to get out into the surrounding nature. You will most likely spot whales from your cabin and, in the evening, we offer Nordic Cuisine in one of the newly restored colonial buildings. Enjoy!

PLEASE NOTE: Prices and travel dates for summer trips 2019 will be made available on our website from the middle of August.

"Ilimanaq is a beautiful place we are happy to have in our portfolio. It's a nice, little village with a fantastic restaurant, beautiful scenery and the opportunity to go on beautiful hikes." Ellen Schmidt
NEW! Luxurious mini break: Adventurous stay in the settlement Ilimanaq

Itinerary

You will fly directly from Iceland to Ilulissat, after which you immediately proceed to the village of Ilimanaq. You have to sail for a short trip past the Ilulissat Icefjord, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. In Ilimanaq, you can relax in the cottages in the lovely village, or you can buy one or more of our excursions, which give you exciting experiences in the hinterland and on the banks of the Icefjord. If you want to take full advantage of the trip, we recommend that you participate in one or more of these excursions.

  • Day 1 Flight Reykjavik-Ilulissat. Boat to Ilimanaq. Welcome meeting and village tour

This trip centers around your stay in Ilimanaq and the tranquility you can enjoy in this beautiful village. Your trip starts at Reykjavik Airport, where you board the plane that takes you from Iceland to Ilulissat. After arrival, you will be transported by minibus from the airport to the harbor. On the boat trip from Ilulissat to the village, we sail past the famous Ilulissat Icefjord, where thousands of icebergs rise out of the water. Ilulissat Isfjord was admitted to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. Today, the most popular excursion in Greenland is a boat trip to the mouth of Ilulissat Icefjord and this experience is included in your trip when you go to Ilimanaq. The sailing trip lasts approx. one hour.

From the harbor of Ilimanaq, we walk to the cabins. There are 15 of them in total. Each luxury cottage has a great view of the Disko Bay and the mouth of the ice fjord, which lies a little to the north of the village. The cottages have two levels and a private bathroom and toilet, a balcony and a cozy lounge with panoramic windows.

Now it's time for an information meeting. You will hear about the countryside, Greenland and your opportunities for the next couple of days - and then it's time to start discovering.

    Tour of the village

Ilimanaq is a traditional Greenlandic village. To this day, the main industries are hunting and fishing. Approx. 50 people live here and of those, approx. 10 are school age children. They attend the small school and, also, there is a nursing home, a heliport, a service house with a laundromat and a workshop, a meeting house, and a soccer field. The service house is a typical feature of small settlements in Greenland. Here the inhabitants of the village can wash their clothes, take a shower, etc.

The village's former Danish name is Claushavn, named after Dutch whaler Klaes Pietersz Thorp, who hunted whales in the area from 1719 to 1732. At that time, the area was the most inhabited place in Greenland. As mentioned, Ilimanaq has some of the oldest buildings in the colonial era. The renovated church of Ilimanaq is somewhat younger, dating from 1908. Also, there is a fishing house, a couple of storages, a former coal house and a building for boiling blubber.

What today serves as a reception to the Ilimanaq Lodge was built in 1778 as a grocery store and a place where the locals could sell hides, blubber and the like. The building served this function for centuries. The restaurant building from 1751 was originally the property of the village governor. Later, it has had many functions including as a home for priests, missionaries, and traders. There has also been a village office, a leather workshop and much more.

You will experience these places on your walking tour of the village. After the tour, and maybe a drink on your balcony, it's time for dinner. For the next three evenings, you will eat very delicious dinners at Poul Egede’s restored house. The lovely restaurant serves the most delicious new Nordic food with a local flavor. It is Nordic cuisine of the highest caliber, and you will love it.

info The church in Ilimanaq was built in 1908 and has been renovated recently.
  • Day 2 Hike to Northern Houses (optional)

Today, you can choose to enjoy your private terrace, relax in the countryside and experience the village life. If you choose to do this, you should consider a small excursion where you go for coffee at the house of a local family. If, on the other hand, you have bought one of our excursions, now is the time for a hike.

Hike to the Ilulissat Icefjord and the old graves – Northern Houses (optional)

Northern Houses (Nordre Huse in Danish) are located about six kilometers from Ilimanaq, and it takes a couple of hours to walk there. On this excursion, you start with a beautiful view from one of the hilltops north of the village. There is a really good view of the Disco Bay, the terrain and the small, colored houses in Ilimanaq. In the other direction, you can see the huge icebergs that are waiting for us. We walk past old foundations of former homes, old Inuit graves and a more modern cemetery left in the middle of the countryside. Northern Houses was a village, but today only the foundations of the houses are left. From here, we go up on a hilltop from which you can see the largest icebergs in Ilulissat Icefjord. In clear weather, you can see all the way to the glacier front 65 kilometers away. Along the way, we enjoy lunch, and then we go back to Ilimanaq by boat. A delicious dinner awaits us.

  • Day 3 Relaxation or Glacier Adventure (optional)

Today, you get the chance to go on a glacier adventure (min. four people). Alternatively, enjoy the silence and calm of the village.

Glacier Hiking at the Tasiusaq Fjord – Sailing and ATV (optional)

Only a few people have the privilege of getting on an excursion with ATVs in Greenland. Today, we will use ATVs to reach the mouth of the Tasiuaq fjord system and thus the edge of the Greenland ice sheet. We sail a little south of the village where we find the ATVs. From here, we drive up the mountain to enjoy an impressive view of the sand plains south of Ilimanaq. After this short stop, we continue until we leave the ATVs at the beach and board a boat.
We go ashore at the end of the fjord and walk to the edge of the ice sheet. Our experienced guide explains the safety procedures for glacier hiking before moving on. We have brought our lunch with us, and we eat it when we get hungry. After the hiking, we go back to Ilimanaq in the same manner that we came. At home we will have a wonderful dinner.

It's your last night in Greenland, so enjoy it! Keep in mind that the midnight sun is shining 24/7.

  • Day 4 Ilimanaq-Ilulissat-Reykjavik

In the morning, we will return to Ilulissat from Ilimanaq by boat. From here, the trip continues by plane. With your head full of memories from the fantastic village, we fly from Ilulissat to Reykjavik International Airport, where we arrive at 6:25 PM.
