Huge icebergs and the Greenland Ice Sheet in the midnight sun

Get close to the Ice Cap and the UNESCO listed Ilulissat Ice Fjord famous for its enormous icebergs – experience all of it in the magical glow of the midnight sun.

A tour to Greenland is an experience entirely on nature’s terms and on this 8-day visit, you will get up close and personal with nature: The Ice Cap and glaciers in Kangerlussuaq as well as ice and even more ice in Ilulissat beautifully accompanied by Greenland’s unique culture and traditional lifestyle in contrast to the influence of the modern way of life.

The contrasts in Greenland are best experienced during summer months where bright sunlight can suddenly be replaced by a foggy mist. Brown mountains with hints of green versus icebergs in shades ranging from pale opaque to turquoise. Deserted, pristine areas right next to towns with the characteristically brightly coloured houses. The light is also unique – especially with the midnight sun's soft glow around the clock. All in all; prepare yourself to be overcome by the forces of nature!

NEW! This tour is a bestseller that we have arranged for many years with great success. Accommodation has traditionally been at a hotel and a lodge. However, on this tour, you are accommodated at Old Camp and Petrines House - both places offer kitchen facilities so you can prepare your own food.

Please note: Trips departing July 15, August 12 and August 19 last 9 days instead of 8.

"It was an amazing tour. Greenland and the destinations are indescribable - you have to see them yourself. The guides made us feel very safe, they were always there for us and they knew a lot about their job - and they liked it! " F. Hartvig Pedersen

The itinerary of this tour is identical with tour nr. 7030. The only difference is that you are staying in a youth hostel instead of a hotel. The tour presents you an outline which you can choose to fill by yourself with extra activities. You may want to have the day by yourself, or book an extra excursion package which takes you on a range of exciting tours to the area’s main sights. If you choose the excursion package, you will still enjoy sufficient time to explore on your own.

  • Day 1 Copenhagen – Kangerlussuaq, check-in at Old Camp

Air Greenland flies from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq allowing you 4 hours to prepare yourself for your encounter with a truly unique world. During the flight, you can enjoy a meal, a movie as well as the first sight of Nunataks and the Ice Cap.

Upon arrival, a guide from our local partner will welcome you and help you check in at Old Camp, which offers cosy accommodation only a glance from the fascinating nature. At the following information meeting the guide will tell you about the area and the many excursions available.

Kangerlussuaq is beautifully situated between soft hills and close to the Ice Cap. It is the only place in Greenland where you can experience both reindeer and musk oxen. Kangerlussuaq is also the perfect place to see and step onto the legendary Ice Cap, which covers 80% of Greenland. Join a guided trip to the Ice Cap and experience it for yourself.

Greenland Ice Sheet Point 660 (optional)

Kangerlussuaq is known as the gateway to the Ice Cap, and this is a guided tour to the immense ice sheet the size of Western Europe. We will travel in four-wheel driven vehicles through a stunning and varied terrain. As we approach the Ice Cap, we will pass the Russell Glacier and an amazing moraine landscape. At the end of the road awaits the Ice Cap itself - a truly unique experience. We will spend some time in this vast world of ice before returning to our vehicles. The trip offers great opportunities for spotting reindeer and musk oxen. Join this trip for a unique opportunity to climb the Ice Cap. It is quite something to feel the extreme cold and let your eyes wander across the seemingly infinite ice surface. The trip lasts approx. 5 hours, and coffee/tea/water is served en route.

    Duration: Approx. 5 hours

info Kangerlussuaq is the perfect place to see and step onto the legendary Ice Cap, which covers 82% of Greenland.
  • Day 2 Flight Kangerlussuaq – Ilulissat, welcome meeting and midnight sailing (optional)

The tour continues by plane to Ilulissat. Ilulissat means icebergs, which is rather self-explanatory once you get to see the beautiful Ice Fjord and the numerous icebergs majestically floating around in the fjord lit up by an almost magical light caused by reflections of the sun.

Upon arrival, you will be transferred to Petrines House, located in the town centre close to everything. At the following information meeting, a guide from World of Greenland will inform you about Ilulissat and the wide range of excursions available. You are now prepared for the next couple of days filled with adventures.

The hometown of Arctic explorer Knud Rasmussen offers many exciting experiences whether you want to go on hiking trips in the hills or merely enjoy the cosy atmosphere in town and whether you want to be on your own or participate in guided excursions.

The World of Greenland tourist office – located right in the centre of Ilulissat – covers the entire spectrum and invites you to experience the town’s ideal mix of authentic Inuit culture, modern society and its strong connection with the fascinating nature.

    This day we suggest:

Historical town walk (included in the Excursion Package)

If you are interested in history, you may want to join a cultural historic walk giving you an introduction to Greenland's history – from colonial time to today. The walk includes visits to the open market, Knud Rasmussen’s place of birth, which today is the town’s museum, and the beautiful wooden Zion church right in front of the Ice Fjord.

info We recommend that you join some of the guided boat trips allowing you to see the Disco Bay from the sea and to experience the giant icebergs and the incredible surroundings in the Disco Bay.
  • Day 3 Adventures in and around Ilulissat

Ilulissat is located at the mouth of the 60-kilometre long and world-famous Kangia Ice Fjord, which in 2004 was listed as UNESCO world heritage. The ice is enthralling and can be experienced at sea, on land and from the air.

If you purchased the Excursion package a midnight sailing is included:

Experience the Ice Fjord from sea at night (included in the Excursion Package)

A boat trip on the Ice Fjord at night in the glow of the midnight sun is a wonderful experience. Kangia produces some of the world’s largest icebergs and only by boat you will get a true impression of the actual size and beauty of these floating ice giants.

info Ilulissat – Jakobshavn – was founded in 1741 and, today, it is the third largest town in Greenland with more than 4,500 inhabitants.
  • Day 4 Adventures in and around Ilulissat

Spend the day exploring Ilulissat on your own. We suggest this trip:

Calving glacier Eqip Sermia (included in the Excursion Package)

Another unique experience is a boat trip to the calving glacier Eqip Sermia. The glacier runs out into the fjord 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat, and it is possible to get very close to the edge of the glacier by boat and experience huge ice pieces calve – keeping a safe distance of course. The boat trip to Eqi takes you up north along the coast, passing Bredebugt, the Oqaatsut settlement and the huge fjord system Pakitsoq often visited by whales and seals. Before we reach Eqi, the trip continues through Ataa Strait surrounded by steep mountains with a rich birdlife and waterfalls.

The glacier is more than 3.4 kilometres wide, and the average height from the bed to the top is about 200 metres – out of which only 30 to 80 metres are above sea level.

info Beautiful icebergs provide the setting for the old settlement of Sermermiut 1.5 kilometres south of Ilulissat.
  • Day 5 Adventures in and around Ilulissat

Spend the day exploring Ilulissat on your own. If you have purchased the Excursion Package, we suggest:

Easy hikes along the Ice Fjord (included in the Excursion Package)

The area around Ilulissat also invites for both shorter and longer hiking trips – for example to the abandoned Sermermiut settlement and along the impressive Ice Fjord. You should also allow yourself to stroll around town at your own pace – remember your camera and make sure to capture the soft tumbling sled dog puppies enjoying their freedom with a bunch of kids at their tails.

info Only few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi Glacier, which ends in the fjord 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat. It is possible to get very close to the glacier by boat and experience huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are thunderous, and the sight of ice crashing into the water is astonishing.
  • Day 6 Adventures in and around Ilulissat - e.g. kayaking

Today is at your own disposal. Maybe you would just want to walk around Ilulissat and see how life is being lived in a Greenlandic town. Remember your camera, as there are always nice images to capture.

Today you also get the chance to experience kayaking in the country that originated the kayaks.

    Kayak Experience in Ilulissat (Optional)

Inuit have kayaked in the Greenland waters for more than a thousand years and you can do it also. The kayak glides silently through the water and you see the huge icebergs rising around you. The midnight sun gives the ice a unique hue. In cloudy weather, the beautiful blue colors of the icebergs will be very clear. With a little luck, we also meet whales. All tours take place in stable double kayaks and a boat follows close by. The excursion takes about 3½-4 hours and we will be at sea for at least two of those hours.

info Remember your camera, as there are always nice images to capture.
  • Day 7 Adventures in and around Ilulissat

Whale safari (included in the Excursion Package)

It is a great experience to get really close to large animals like whales.

There are 15 species of whale in Greenland; three of these stay in Greenland during winter, including the narwhal, the beluga and the bow-head whale (also known as the Greenland right whale). The blue whale and the killer whale are only rarely seen.

During summer, it is normally the humpback, the common minke whale and the fin whale we get to see. The whales swim the entire Disco Bay during summer – sometimes close to the town, sometimes in the Ice Fjord or further up north by the island Arveprinsens Ejland.

We are in constant radio contact with fishermen and hunters, who are our source of information about the whales and their whereabouts. The humpback with its characteristic fin is the most commonly witnessed on these safaris.

Ee use the fast boat type Targa to cover more ground.

info During the summer it is normally the humpback, the common minke whale and the fin whale, we see. The whales swim the entire Disco Bay during the summer; sometimes close to the town, sometimes in the ice fiord or up north by the island, Arveprinsens Ejland.
  • Day 8 Ilulissat-Kangerlussuaq-Copenhagen

Offering one final view of the Ice Fjord and the captivating icebergs, the flight will take you back to Kangerlussuaq and onwards to Copenhagen where you will arrive in the evening.

We guarantee you that you will go home with a luggage full of memories that will stay with you longer than any other holiday you have been on – at least that is what other travellers tell us.

info You will get a last impression of the huge icebergs in the Ilulissat Ice Fjord with a stunning view from the air above the entire area.
