Itinerary

The outline of this tour gives you the basis for an unforgettable winter holiday in Greenland. The days will be free for your making, which you make choose to fill with dog sleigh rides, city tours, sailing trips through the ice bergs and hiking trips to remote living areas. The trip of course starts with a welcome meeting, which presents you with information about the town, plus the many options for trips.

  • Day 1 Arrival to Ilulissat, optional hike

You will leave Reykjavik Domestic Airport (Iceland) late in the morning and arrive in Ilulissat at 1 P.M. During the approach to Ilulissat, the town seemingly pops up in the middle of nowhere. The coloured houses vie for attention among the snow-covered peaks, and at the bump of the Dash aircraft landing, you can look forward to the next few days full of ice, winter and dogsleds - combined with cultural highlights from a very traditional Greenlandic town.

We check in at Greenland's best hotel, Hotel Arctic, and at the following information meeting, you get to hear more about the town and the many excursions available.

If you have purchased the Excursion Package, you will be going on an afternoon walk to Sermermiut and the Ice Fjord:

    Hike to old settlement (optional)

Beautiful icebergs provide the setting for the old settlement of Sermermiut 1.5 kilometres south of Ilulissat. For 4,000 years, different Inuit cultures lived in the settlement and, today, you can still see the relics, which indicate their presence. Hear the story about the life of the Inuit people and their traditions before the Europeans came to Greenland. See the ruins and touch the permafrost with your own hands. On this hike, we will pass “kællingekløften” where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Ice Fjord, before heading back again. During the hike, there will be time to talk about flora, fauna, geology and not least the story behind the omnipresent ice.

info Ilulissat means icebergs, which is rather self-explanatory once you get to see the beautiful Ice Fjord and the numerous icebergs majestically floating around in the fjord lit up by an almost magical light caused by reflections of the sun.
  • Day 2 Day at your own disposal, optional dogsled trip, town walk and/or Northern Lights Safari

If you have purchased the Excursion Package, you are going on a dogsled ride this day:

    Two-hour dogsled ride (optional)

On this 2-hour sled trip, we will go over the mountain Little Akinnaq about 7 kilometres, until we reach a beautiful vantage point. The ride goes through a hilly terrain, and you will see the dogs both in front of the sled and behind as breaks when the terrain is steep.

The dogsled is one of the strongest icons of Greenland, an Inuit tradition, which goes back 2000 years. You will not find many other means of transportation, which has survived for that long without any changes. The basic principle is still the same as in the Viking age; some dogs tied to a simple construction of wood. The experience cannot be explained – you have to try it for yourself.

If you need more activities this day, we also suggest a town walk.

    Cultural history walk (optional)

Some people might think: “we can just take a walk around the town on our own.” And yes, you probably could, but with the guided cultural historic tour you will get an enhanced understanding of the Greenlandic culture and history, which will give all your other experiences in Greenland a new perspective. Ilulissat – Jakobshavn – was founded in 1741 and, today, it is the third largest town in Greenland with more than 4,500 inhabitants. The guide will tell you about the history of the town, the Greenlandic culture and contemporary life 300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. We will visit the fishermen at the harbour and the hunters at their trading post “Brættet”. We will show you the church and famous explorer Knud Rasmussen's place of birth. This cultural historic walk is a great shortcut to a lot of knowledge.

This walk can be booked on-site at the welcome meeting upon arrival.

    Northern Lights Safari (optional)

When the sky is clear on winter nights you can see the most beautiful Northern Lights over Ilulissat. Aurora Borealis is without a doubt the night sky's most spectacular phenomenon. We are going to drive away from the lights of the town and go to where the darkness is most intense. The guide will tell us all about the causes of the phenomenon. You will also get tips and tricks to enable you to take the best pictures of the colored lights as they cross the night sky. The trip takes 90 minutes and coffee and tea is served.

  • Day 3 Day at your own disposal, optional cruise among icebergs

The last afternoon in Ilulissat you will get to see the icebergs up close if you have purchased the Excursion Package.

    Cruise among the icebergs (optional)

Almost every visitor to Ilulissat chooses to go on this boat trip among the icebergs at least once. Every day, more than 40 million ton of ice flow out into the fjord. The floating icebergs are gigantic, sometimes measuring more than 100 metres wide and long – and with a height of more than 100 metres above the water surface as well. These giants gather at the end of the fjord providing you with a great opportunity to sail among them. The icebergs are a wonderful sight in every kind of weather; in the sunshine the contrasts are very clear, the blue shades are very beautiful when it is cloudy. Definitely an extraordinary experience. Remember to bring warm clothes – otherwise sealskin clothing is available for rent.
