Visit Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland from Iceland

Greenland is one of the premier destinations for people dreaming of a trip to the Arctic. Experiences include untouched wilderness and exciting traditional Inuit culture. It is a unique and inspiring destination for mind-blowing adventures – more vast and diverse than you can ever imagine.

Midnight sun, authentic Inuit culture, the amazing abundance of wildlife – humpback whales, reindeer, musk oxen – colourful houses in hilly terrains, an endless horizon, majestic icebergs, the impressive Ice Cap, full of mystery, and huge mountainous areas. To sum it all up: A world of its own.

Located on the west coast of Greenland – 300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle – the famous Ilulissat Ice Fjord is filled with icebergs from “Sermeq Kujalleq”, which is the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere.

The town of Ilulissat is an exciting mix of Inuit culture, modern life and thousands of sled dogs pulsing under the magical light of the midnight sun.

Are you looking for your Arctic dream to come true, you should combine a visit to Iceland with a getaway to Ilulissat. But beware – you might want to come back here!

PLEASE NOTE: Prices and travel dates for summer trips 2019 will be made available on our website from the middle of August.

"The excursions were absolutely mind-blowing and the quality and professionalism of all the staff were most impressive. The travel arrangements were exactly as stated and very much to schedule, everything just dove-tailed into place. I have no suggestions for improvement. Thank you for a memorable experience!" Howard Cartz
Visit Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland from Iceland

Itinerary

This relatively short day trip secures you the biggest highlights around the UNESCO world heritage site ice fjord. Despite the daily departures of the trip, a leisurely pace of the tour is guaranteed – the way a tour in Greenland is intended to be, allowing you to soak up the whole experience.

  • Day 1 Flight Reykjavik (Keflavik International Airport) to Ilulissat (Greenland)

Flight from Kaflavik International Airport at Reykjavik to Ilulissat. This is a 4-hour flight where you will experience the varied landscapes in Iceland and Greenland from above. The white, icy surface with Nunataks popping up, enormous deserted areas and isolated towns and settlements bear witness to a world of its own and as the plane approaches Ilulissat, the sight of the famous Ice Fjord with its park of sculptural icebergs fills you with anticipation. Ahead awaits something extraordinary!

Upon arrival to Ilulissat, you will check in at the 4-star Hotel Arctic. The hotel is located with an incredible view of the Ice Fjord, which was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. The Ice Fjord contains one of the biggest and most active glaciers in the world. The glacier advances approx. 19 metres a day and produces about 35 square kilometres of icebergs a year. Besides the beautiful sight, you may also hear rumbling sounds from the ice. The hotel’s dogs slumber in the hills ignoring the summer warmth and the astonishing view.

  • Day 2 Welcome meeting, hike to Sermermiut and Sailing to Icefjord

After breakfast, a guide from World of Greenland will welcome and tell you about the coming days. After this meeting, your first adventure awaits:

Hike to Sermermiut, the abandoned settlement

On this morning, you will enjoy a guided hiking trip to the abandoned Inuit settlement of Sermermiut 1.5 kilometres south of Ilulissat. At Sermermiut, you can still see relics from the different Inuit cultures that wisely chose to inhabit this spot. There is a fantastic view across the Ice Fjord and the entire hinterland.

Sermermiut is beautifully situated at the mouth of the Ice Fjord. Because of its good fishing conditions, Sermermiut has been the preferred settlement in the area for several thousand years. The last residents did not move from Sermermiut to Jakobshavn until the 1850s when the colony of Jakobshavn had existed for more than 100 years. A beautiful walk along the fjord with icebergs of all shapes and sizes.

The afternooon is at your own disposal. Ilulissat is Greenland’s third largest town with approx. 4,500 inhabitants and 3,300 sled dogs. In the summertime, the fishermen are busy, and small boats chug in and out of the harbour. The dogsleds are parked – as are the dogs that spend their summer vacation relaxing in the hills while longing for the first snowfall.

The various souvenir shops in town provide you with the opportunity to admire – and buy – the unique Greenlandic arts and crafts. Enjoy the town and the history from the colonial time to the modern society of today. We recommend you to visit the old part of the town, the harbour, the open fish and meat market, the old Zion church and the museum.

In the evening you will enjoy a nice dinner at Hotel Arctic.

    Sailing to the Icefjord

After the dinner a boat trip will take you to the park of icebergs willingly giving you one last impressive sight. The midnight sun casts an orange/soft pink glow on the landscape. You will love this wonderful moment in Ilulissat.

info The Ilulissat Ice Fjord is filled with icebergs calved at the Sermeq Kujalleq, which is the most productive glacier in the world with a daily yield of 40 metres of glacier brook.
  • Day 3 Boat trip to Eqi Glacier

Only few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi Glacier, which ends in the fjord 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat. It is possible to get very close to the glacier by boat and experience huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are thunderous, and the sight of icebergs crashing into the water is astonishing.

Boat trip to the Eqi Galcier

The duration of the boat trip to and from the glacier is 2 - 5 hours each way. It depends on the boat used on the given day. The stop in front of the glacier will last approximately 2 hours.

Programme for this excursion (departure and arrival time depending on the boat type):
09.00 A.M. Departure from Ilulissat in modern and convenient tourist boats with seats both outside and inside. Tea and coffee will be served on the way, and you can buy beer and water. After departure, a light breakfast is served. During the boat trip, the guide will talk about the sights we pass on the way.

11.30 A.M. When we approach to the glacier, a delicious lunch will be served. The boat will stay in front of the glacier for approximately 2 hours, while we hope to spot some amazing calvings.

The boat trip back to Ilulissat follows the same route. Coffee/tea and cake will be served late in the afternoon. Seals and whales are often spotted on the way.

Remember warm clothes for this excursion. You experience a lot when outside on the boat. This can get cold, however.

In the evening, a nice  dinner will be served at the hotel.

On some departures the Boat trip to Eqi Glacier will be scheduled on day 2.

  • Day 4 On your own or whale watching by boat. Flight back to Iceland

You have this day to discover Ilulissat on your own. You can take a hike in the mountains or you can go and experience the city some more.

There is also the opportunity to go on a whale watching trip.

    Whale watching (Optional excursion)

It is a fantastic experience to get close to large animals such as whales. There are 15 species of whale in Greenland. Three of these stay in Greenland during the winter; the narwhals, the beluga and the bow-head whale (also known as the Greenland whale). Blue whales and killer whales are not seen very often.

During the summer we normally encounter the humpback whale, the common minke whale and the fin whale. The whales swim in the entire Disco Bay during the summer. Sometimes they come close to the town, sometimes they are in the ice fiord or up north by the Crown Prince Island.

We are in constant radio contact with the fishermen. They are our sources of information about the whales and their whereabouts. The humpback, with its characteristic fin, is the one we see most of the time.

The trip lasts approx. 4 hours. We use the fast boat Targa, so we can get around.

    Return flight

After some wonderful days, we fly back to Keflavik International Airport near Reykjavik in the late afternoon. The flight over the Ilulissat Icefjord and the Greenland Ice Sheet is in itself memorable. A light, cold meal is served on the plane.
