Greenland Capital Nuuk and Ilulissat Icefjord

This itinerary will give you lots of both culture and nature in the two Greenlandic towns of Nuuk and Ilulissat. You have the framework for an exciting trip. We have also made some unique and intense excursion packages. If you purchase one of these, you will truly explore the wonders of Greenland. However, there will also be some time on your own to explore exactly what interests you the most.

  • Day 1 Afternoon flight from Keflavik International Airport to Nuuk

Your Greenland adventure starts in Iceland at the Keflavik International Airport. You leave late in the day and arrive at night in Nuuk. At Nuuk Airport, you will be picked up and taken to the Hotel Hans Egede. This is your home for the next two nights.

Nuuk is a town of some 17,000 souls. To many people this is the equivalent of a small suburb but that is not the feeling you get once you set foot in Nuuk. This is a government town, an educational town, and a cultural town with lots to offer.

When you have checked in, we will have a short welcome meeting with the local guide.

Hotel Hans Egede, a great location with great cuisine

Hotel Hans Egede is situated centrally in Nuuk in the main street in walking distance to shopping centers, restaurants and cafés. Hotel Hans Egede offer great dining. Restaurant Sarfalik is easily the best restaurant in Nuuk and lies on the top floor of the hotel.

The kitchen offers a high quality international cuisine, northern with Greenlandic ingredients.

Near the hotel, you will find lots of other restaurants and cafés if you want to try something else. This something else could be the Greenlandic Thai fusion kitchen at the restaurant next door, Charoen Porn.

    Intense summers in Nuuk

The summer nights in Nuuk are very light. We don’t have the visible midnight sun here but it’s light until past midnight. You should consider a walk to one of the small hill tops near the hotel to get a good view of the town and its surroundings. You only have to walk a few hundred meters to achieve this. Also, within a short walking distance, you find the old colonial harbor with fine old buildings.

Here, the temperatures can reach 10-25 degrees Celcius in the daytime on summers. It doesn’t sound very warm but actually it feels pretty warm because of the low humidity in Greenland. The temperatures and the light means that people are often out and about, enjoying the Arctic summer while they can. Nuuk is close to the water so there is often a late afternoon breeze in Nuuk. Therefore, bring a windbreaker if you take a walk wearing just a T-shirt.

info Hotel Hans Egede is located in the mainstreet of Nuuk
  • Day 2 Optional excursions: Sightseeing and National Museum. Boat trip to Qooqqut. Fish’n'dish

You should start your day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel before venturing off on foot with a local guide for a tour of Nuuk.

Town walk – see the mummies of Qilakitsoq (optional)

This morning’s walk will take place at 9-11 and will include a visit to the National Museum of Nuuk. You really do not want to miss the mummies at the museum!

The Mummies of Qilakitsoq were found in 1972 by two brothers hunting up north near the town of Uummannaq. Looking under the shelter of a rock, they found 8 freeze-dried mummies. They are amazingly intact even though they are about 600 years old. Four of these mummies are on display at the museum. They are so beautiful, especially the baby mummy. On some of the women, you can see the 600 years old tattoos on their faces.

The museum also has a wonderful display of the Greenland national costumes and covers all of Greenland’s history in its buildings.

The tour will also take us around the rest of the old colonial harbor, including the statue of The Mother of the Sea, past Parliament and through Greenland’s Cultural House Katuaq and other of the major sights of the city center.

Before the next excursion, you will have some time for shopping and lunch. Try one of the cafés, e.g. Café Esmeralda or Café Pascucci.

The Greenlandic national costume and Kaffemik – coffee with a local family (optional)

We start our tour at 13.30 at the office of Tupilak Travel, one of our local partners in Nuuk. Here, we will meet our guide and walk together to Kittat, an Econo Museum placed right across from the National Museum that we visited yesterday. Our guide will tell us all about the skins on display and about the traditional way of tanning the hides. We will hear about the beautiful Greenlandic national costume and it’s many different parts. We will also see how the women embroider with skins. This takes about half an hour.

After Kittat, we are going to walk together to visit a local family. We will experience a ‘Kaffemik’ today. A kaffemik is a typical Greenlandic tradition. Every time something has to be celebrated, we invite people to kaffemik. Here we will have coffee or tea and homemade cake. You will get to hear about life for a typical family in one of the northernmost capitals in the world.

Then it's time for a transfer to the harbor.

Boat trip to Qooqqut, including angling (optional)

At 3:30 PM we will set off from Nuuk Atlantic Harbor. We are going on a boat trip to the wonderful Qooqqut Nuan’ Restaurant. This is no ordinary restaurant visit: while sailing through the enormous fjord system behind Nuuk. We are not exaggerating when we say it is big: it is actually the second largest fjord system in the world. Somewhere in the fjord, we are going to make a stop and catch our dinner. Tonight, there will be no complaining that the fish isn’t fresh!

Qooqqut is located in a wonderful, secluded valley in the Nuuk fjords. The mountains surrounding the valley are up to 2,000 meters high. Trees are scattered in the area behind the restaurant. There is even a soccer field close to the restaurant. One of Nuuk’s most respected chefs moves here during the summer and serves the most fantastic dishes.

After dinner, we get back into the boat and return to Nuuk where we will arrive around 9:00 PM, ready for a good night’s sleep (or maybe a night cap in one of the many places surrounding the hotel).

info "Katuaq" is Greenland's cultural house
  • Day 3 Shopping. Nuuk-Ilulissat

Your third day starts with a good breakfast at the hotel.

Today, the program may vary, depending on your travel dates. Sometimes, the flights from Nuuk to Ilulissat are early, sometimes they happen later in the day.

Apart from the flight, checking in in Ilulissat, and an information meeting, this is the day where you get to do what you want to.

In Nuuk, we suggest that you visit Nuuk Art Museum with its unique collection of Greenlandic art. You could also explore Nuuk some more or maybe wander to the edge of the town. Here you can see the beautiful graveyard or the so-called Circus Lake. Nuuk is a very exciting town with lots of possibilities.

    Shopping in Nuuk

There are a lot of shops in Nuuk. You will not find the usual high street shops, though. Nuuk is too small for that. Instead, you will find unique shops with lots of great design. Right across the street from the hotel is Inuk Design. They sell wonderful local design. Not far from here, you will also find Anori Art at the Nuuk Center. They sell Greenlandic, handmade souvenirs and other more traditional items such as T-shirts. There are many other great shops close to the hotel. At the hotel you will find the pamphlet called Colorful Nuuk and it lists all the great shops.

    Flight to Ilulissat

Today, we head north to Ilulissat. We board the plane at Nuuk Airport and arrive at Ilulissat Airport in North Greenland. After arrival in Ilulissat and the info meeting, you are still free to do what you want to.

Ilulissat was founded in 1741 and has grown to be the third largest town in Greenland with more than 4,500 inhabitants. It's a sprawling place with lots of fun things to do. Take a walk around the harbour with its fishermen and visit the hunters at their trading post “Brættet”. You can visit the art museum and there are also good shopping possibilities in Ilulissat.

At night, take in a good dinner at your hotel or in one of the other good restaurants in town.

info We recommend a visit to Nuuk Art Museum to see a unique collection of Greenlandic art
  • Day 4 Sightseeing and farewell dinner. Optional: Town walk, Sermermiut and Sailing among Icebergs

If you have bought an excursion package, you will have a busy program today.

    Town Walk (option)

If you are interested in history, you may want to join a cultural historic walk giving you an introduction to Greenland's history – from colonial time to today. The walk includes visits to the open market, Knud Rasmussen’s place of birth, which today is the town’s museum, and the beautiful wooden Zion church right in front of the Icefjord.

Easy hike to the Ilulissat Icefjord in Sermermiut Valley (option)

From around noon, we will take you on a hike to the abandoned settlement of Sermermiut. The remains of the settlement will show you how the Inuit have lived in the area for more than 4,000 years. The settlement is situated on the banks of the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will sit down and enjoy the stunning view of the Icefjord. This trip takes about 2-2½ hours and you will have the rest of the afternoon on your own so you can explore the town of Ilulissat.

Farewell Dinner with at Hotel Arctic

At 6:30 PM we will have a Farewell Dinner at the hotel. Your hotel is located close to the water with good views of all the ice that surrounds Ilulissat.

Sailing among Icebergs in the Ilulissat Icefjord (option)

At around 9:00 PM, we are going sailing in the midnight sun among the icebergs at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord. This is undoubtedly a boat trip you will never forget! It is quite something to sail by these enormous icebergs. They have broken off the Greenland Ice Sheet before starting their travel through the long fjord. At the mouth of the fjord, they often sit for months on end, stuck on the underwater sand banks. Finally, a big wave or their thawing will make it possible for them to move on out into the Disco Bay.

info Sailing among Icebergs in the Ilulissat Icefjord is a boat trip you will never forget!
  • Day 5 Whale Watching (Option). Flight from Ilulissat to Keflavik International Airport

Today, you will still have a lot of time to explore as we are not leaving Ilulissat until late in the afternoon. You may want to discover  more of Ilulissat on your own. You could take a hike in the mountains or you can go and experience the city some more.  However, if you bought the De Luxe excursion package, you are about to go on a whale watching trip.

    Whale watching (Optional excursion)

It is a fantastic experience to get close to large animals such as whales. There are 15 species of whale in Greenland. Three of these stay in Greenland during the winter; the narwhals, the beluga and the bow-head whale (also known as the Greenland whale). Blue whales and killer whales are not seen very often.

During the summer we normally encounter the humpback whale, the common minke whale and the fin whale. The whales swim in the entire Disco Bay during the summer. Sometimes they come close to the town, sometimes they are in the ice fiord or up north by the Crown Prince Island.

We are in constant radio contact with the fishermen. They are our sources of information about the whales and their whereabouts. The humpback, with its characteristic fin, is the one we see most of the time.

The trip lasts approx. 4 hours. We use the fast boat Targa, so we can get around. After this boat trip, you will still have time to do some more explloring in Ilulissat.

In the late afternoon, it's time to return to Iceland. After having spent some memorable and unforgettable days in this Arctic paradise, it is time for you to return to Reykjavik in Iceland. We guarantee you that you will go home with a luggage full of memories that will stay with you longer than any other holiday you have been on – at least that is what other travellers tell us.

You will get a last impression of the huge icebergs in the Ilulissat Ice Fjord with a stunning view from the air above the entire area.

You could stay a day or two in wonderful Iceland. Either way, you will have some splendid days to look back on. Remember to bring your camera - you will want to take pictures every minute of the day.

info Enjoy the midnight sun over Ilulissat and the Ilulissat Icefjord when you fly back to Iceland around midnight.
