Arctic Spring and Golden Sun in Greenland

Spring in Greenland is a very intense experience – from April to May Greenland turns from Arctic winter to Arctic summer and the midnight sun turns nights into days. The snow is melting fast, days turns warmer and a hectic summer begins.

Are you looking for a Greenland tour that combines spring, impressive nature and pioneering culture this is the tour for you. If you also prefer a vacation that guarantees endless beautiful sceneries, you can be sure to get full benefit from this tour.

We start in Kangerlussuaq, the gateway to Greenland. The hinterland hides a fantastic nature where the huge ice cap with its own life, sounds and cold ice is impossible to ignore. The trip continues with to the town of Ilulissat in the Disco Bay. Ilulissat means icebergs which needs no further explanation once you see the beautiful ice fjord and the numerous icebergs floating majestically into the fjord with an almost magical light and the reflections from the sun.

Hiking possibilities are great in both areas and at this time of year there are no mosquitoes. If winter has been tough and long you might even be able to join in on a sledge tour. At this time of year sailing in the fiord and bay is possible – and we especially recommend a sailing tour the small settlements in the Disco Bay and off course a tour among the huge icebergs.

Arctic Spring and Golden Sun in Greenland

The itinerary of this magnificent spring trip to Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat will allow you plenty of contact with the Greenlandic nature and culture with a varying excursion package – while there being plenty of time to explore Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat by yourself. The stay in both towns starts with an info meeting.

  • Day 1 Flight Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq, welcome meeting, sightseeing - tundra tour (optional)

We fly with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq. Ahead lies an approximately 4 hour flight and an 8 day adventure. A guide from our local tour office World of Greenland Arctic Circle welcomes you upon arrival and assists you with the check in at Hotel Kangerlussuaq. The hotel is situated in the airport building, so all you have to do is take your luggage from the baggage belt and carry it to the reception.

From the hotel there is a direct view of both aircrafts and maybe a little hare hiding in the gray-brown rocks. The crackling sound in the snow echoes in the silence and automatically makes you forget the everyday life.

At the following information meeting the guide will give you practical advice about the area and the optional excursions. It is now time to experience Kangerlussuaq on a guidet sightseeing:

    Sightseeing in Kangerlussuaq

Kangerlussuaq is a former American air base, but today it is the main airport of Greenland. The guide will share exciting stories, starting from the origins of the base, from the second World War to the Cold War, into a modern international airport.

The area around Kangerlussuaq has Greenland's longest road and here we will experience and see several interesting places and meet the great Greenlandic nature. We drive to the harbour to enjoy views of the beautiful fjord. We drive past Kellyville, a small town for science, 12km from the airport and tour the old base area. We will also visit the village kennel where we'll get better acquainted with Greenlandic sled dogs. We'll have ample opportunity to take in the stunning nature during the scenic drive.

If you bought the excursion package it is now time for the tundra and wildlife tour:

    Tundra and wildlife tour (optional)

Kangerlussuaq has incredibly beautiful nature and is home to the massive musk ox. We will drive through the stunning tundra landscape in our 4WD truck and the guide will fill us in on the various wildlife in this area. Maybe we'll get the chance to spot musk oxen and learn more about these incredible creatures.

The musk ox lives wildly in the area around Kangerlussuaq. Whether we can come close to musk oxen, or simply look at them from a distance, is not predictable. But the guide always brings binoculars, so there is a very good chance of seeing these amazing animals and other wildlife in the area. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to explore the stunning nature and wildlife around Kangerlussuaq.

info Kangerlussuaq is beautifully situated between soft hills and close to the Ice Cap. It is the only place in Greenland where you can experience both reindeer and musk oxen.
  • Day 2 Kangerlussuaq on your own, Ice Cap Point 660 (optional)

Today is at your own disposal and the beautiful hinterland invites to various excursions. If you bought the excursion package you will go to the Ice Cap Point 660:

    Ice Cap Point 660 (optional)

Powerful 4WD-vehicles will take us through an incredibly beautiful landscape, through mountains, plains and semi-desert valleys. Near the Ice Cap, we drive to the scenic Russell Glacier and through a fantastic moraine landscape.

At the end of the road, we walk to the Greenland Ice Cap and onto the vast ice sheet. We spend some time exploring this world of ice before returning to our vehicle. There are good chances of spotting reindeer, musk oxen and, depending on the season, many species of birds and flowers.

A tour to the Ice Cap is almost a must when visiting Greenland, so we recommend that you join us on this tour. If you do not wish to buy the full excursion package you can book your excursion directly at our local partner, please visit

info Kangerlussuaq is the perfect place to see and step onto the legendary Ice Cap, which covers 82% of Greenland.
  • Day 3 Flight Kangerlussuaq-Ilulissat, welcome meeting – guided sightseeing (optional)

We now head towards Ilulissat. It's a beautiful 45 minutes flight giving you a perfect chance of really enjoying the beautiful icy landscape, the desolate expanse and grandeur.

During the approach to Ilulissat the town pops up in the middle of nowhere. The coloured houses vie for attention with the snow covered peaks and at the bump of the Dash aircraft landing you can look forward to the next few days full of ice, winter and dogsleds - combined with cultural highlights from a very traditional Greenlandic town.

We check in at the cosy Hotel Icefiord and can on the following information meeting hear more about the town and the many optional excursions. The first excursion in the excursion package is a guided town tour. For those of you not joining the sightseeing there are numerous possibilities. We recommend that you take a walk around the town and the area and just breathe in the fresh air and atmosphere.

    Cultural City Walk (optional)

Ilulissat – former known as Jakobshavn - was founded in 1741 and it is today the third biggest town in Greenland with over 4500 inhabitants. You hear about the town’s history and experience the many exciting facets. You cannot avoid seeing and especially hearing some of the many thousands of sled dogs. Most of them live in the outskirts of the town on large dog spaces – loose puppies play surveyed by the mother and the rest of the gang cannot wait to go on a sled trip.

At the town tour we visit the fishermen at the harbour and the hunters at their trading post “Brædtet”. We will show you the church and the house where the famous Danish Polar explorer, Knud Rasmussen, was born.

info Ilulissat means icebergs, which is rather self-explanatory once you get to see the beautiful Ice Fjord and the numerous icebergs majestically floating around in the fjord lit up by an almost magical light caused by reflections of the sun.
  • Day 4 Ilulissat on your own - hike to Sermermiut (optional)

The Disko Bay is one of Greenland's most popular tourist destinations. First and foremost because of the ice, but also because of its beauty, its many cultural attractions and the interaction between the traditional lifestyle and modern urban life. Racks with kayaks jostle for space with satellite dishes.

If you bought the excursion package it is time for at light hike:

    Hike to Sermermiut (optional)

The beautiful icebergs of Ilulissat create the wing for the abandoned settlement Sermermiut, which is situated one and a half kilometre south of the city. The different Inuit cultures have lived here during the last 4000 years, and today you can still find artefacts, which witness their presence. Hear the story about the life and the customs of the Greenlanders before the Europeans´ arrival; see the ruins, the kitchen mitten, and fell the permafrost with your own hands.

info Beautiful icebergs provide the setting for the old settlement of Sermermiut 1.5 kilometres south of Ilulissat.
  • Day 5 Ilulissat on your own - midnightsailing on the Icefiord (optional)

A day in Ilulissat on your own. If you like you can visit one of the traditional handicraft workshops and look for souvenirs in seal or tooth and bone. If you bought the excursion package you can look forward to the most popular excursion tonight:

    Evening/midnightsailing among the icebergs (optional)

The midnight/evening sun gives the icebergs a unique play of colours that people return to experience again and again. Midnight sun in Ilulissat lasts from May 21st to July 24th. Sailing during the night with the sun still shining is a fantastic and unusual experience.

Almost every visitor in Ilulissat chooses to try this boat trip among the icebergs at least once. During the year, more than 46 km3 of ice flows into the fiord. The result is gigantic icebergs, which can be more than 100 metres on each side and with a height on more than 100 metres above the water surface. These giants strand at the end of the fiord, and that gives a good opportunity to sail among them.

The icebergs are beautiful every kind of weather; in the sunshine the contrasts are very clear, the blue shades are very beautiful, when it is cloudy and the midnight sun casts a unique glow on the icebergs during the night. The boat trip at bright night is definitely an extraordinary experience. An exceptional experience, you do not want to be without, while visiting Ilulissat. Remember to bring warm clothes or you can rent suit of sealskin.

info Almost every visitor in Ilulissat chooses to try a boat trip among the icebergs at least once. Every day, more than 40 million ton of ice flow out into the fjord.
  • Day 6 On your own in Ilulissat - experience the town

Another great day with many opportunities. Ilulissat is located at the mouth of the 60 kilometre long and world famous ice fjord Kangia, which in 2004 was included on UNESCO’s world heritage list. The ice is enthralling and can be experienced out on the sea, on land and from the air. You can see the huge icebergs from the hotel and from almost any spot in town.

You can spend this day experiencing the atmosphere and life in the town. Go back on the wings of history and learn something about the rich history at the local museum – also birth place for the Polar Explorer Knud Rasmussen. Fishermen and hunters at the open market (brættet) give you an idea of the exciting Greenlandic food products – it doesn’t get any fresher.

Don’t miss the restaurants in Ilulissat. They take you on a journey, rich in tastes with local specialties - such as Greenland sushi, deep fried ammasats, whale and seal and in the cafes freshly baked cakes tempt.

  • Day 7 On your own in Ilulissat or boat trip to the settlement Oqaatsut (optional)

If you bought the excursion package you will visit a small settlement today:

Settlement sightseeing: Oqaatsut by boat (optional)

Small isolated settlements are very special in Greenland. They have internet and flat screens in the settlement, but everyday life has another pace. Just one generation ago, majority of the Greenlandic people lived in the small settlements along the coast.

The settlement Oqaatsut, was through several centuries the resort of the Dutch whale hunters, therefore another name for the settlement is Rodebay (red bay). Today whales are still drawn ashore here once in a while. Oqaatsut is beautiful situated app. 15 km. north of Ilulissat, and even though it only has 45 inhabitants it has got its own school, church, shop and a small restaurant called “H8”, which is one of the old building from the colonial time.

On this excursion, we sail from Ilulissat harbor to Oqaatsut and back. The sailing time is approx. 1 hour each way and we pass the impressive Ilulissat Icefjord along the way. We spend about 2 hours in Oqaatsut. Coffee and tea will be served on the boat.

info Today most of the people live in the cities, but Ilulissat still got 4 vivacious settlements. One of those settlements is called Ilimanaq and it is situated south of the ice fiord.
  • Day 8 Flight Ilulissat-Copenhagen via Kangerlussuaq

Enjoy the last view of the Ilulissat ice fjord from the plane on the way to Kangerlussuaq, where the Airbus fly to Copenhagen with arrival in the evening.

info You will get a last impression of the huge icebergs in the Ilulissat Ice Fjord with a stunning view from the air above the entire area.
