Travel insurance
There can be many good reasons to take out travel insurance when you travel abroad. Check whether you are covered by your home contents insurance. Greenland Travel offers travel insurance in cooperation with Europæiske Rejseforsikring and recommends that you always have travel insurance.
The blue and the yellow health insurance card
In 2014 the Danish Parliament decided that you are no longer covered by the yellow card when you travel on holiday within the EU or in the EEA countries – except for Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
The blue card puts you on an equal footing with citizens of the EU and EEA countries. This means that you must pay for treatment that may be free in Denmark but is not free in the country you are visiting.
The blue card in brief:
- The blue card puts you on an equal footing with citizens of the EU and EEA countries.
- Repatriation is never covered by the blue card.
- You can order the blue card at www.borger.dk. It is free of charge.
What does this mean for you if you are travelling to Greenland and the Faroe Islands?
If you travel to Greenland and the Faroe Islands, you are covered as before by virtue of the Danish Realm – that is, you can receive medical treatment, but not repatriation. From 1 August 2014, if you fall ill during your trip, you can call and receive assistance from the SOS alarm centre within the area covered by the health insurance.
The yellow health card covers expenses that are not covered by the healthcare system in Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
What are the rules if you travel to Iceland?
If you travel to Iceland, you are covered in the same way as Icelandic citizens. Please note, however, that you must pay for the treatment there, and you must arrange reimbursement yourself when you get home.
We recommend that you have travel insurance
Whether you need travel insurance for Greenland or another destination, it is a good idea to buy travel insurance when you travel. You are then fully covered for illness and repatriation – and you benefit from the other cover included in the insurance, such as liability and accident insurance as well as legal assistance.
Buying insurance does not cost the earth. But it is money you will regret having saved if you need help.
