Popular places to visit in Greenland

Once you have been to Greenland, chances are that you would want to go back. Many of our travellers have this urge. Both in order to return to places where they have already been and to see a new part of this gigantic island. Greenland simply gets into your blood. Once you have been there yourself, you will know the feeling.

Greenland offers so many wonderful places that it can be difficult to choose where to go. However, here we have highlighted some of the places that our guests love to visit and revisit.

The Ilulissat Icefjord

It is definitely not without reason that the Icefjord has been listed as UNESCO world heritage, and the Icefjord is certainly also one of the main attractions that travellers come to experience. The Icefjord provides the setting for a large number of experiences in and around Ilulissat – here you can sail among icebergs of thousand shapes in daylight as well as in magical midnight sunshine. You can hike along the Icefjord and see an abandoned settlement. And you can take it all in from above on a helicopter tour and maybe even fly across the glacier at the base of the Icefjord, which gives birth to all the icebergs. Almost everywhere you go, you have a view of the Icefjord, and you will never tire of that view!

The Eqi glacier

Very few places in Greenland are as spectacular as the Eqi glacier, which flows into a fjord approx. 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat. And the best thing is that you are able to get very close to the edge of glacier by boat and see giant pieces of ice break off. The glacier calves so often that most people visiting the glacier will experience the sound and sight of this amazing natural scenery. The cracking sounds are deafening and the sight of the ice tumbling out into the water is breath-taking.

Glacier Lodge Eqi

If you have more time to spend than just one day, you should grant yourself a stay in one of the 11 cosy lodges at Glacier Lodge Eqi. The lodges are located right across from the Eqi glacier, which calves all the time, and from all cabins you are able to both see and hear when the icebergs are born. It is very meditative to sit and look at mother nature’s own fireworks.

The Greenland Ice Sheet

The Ice Cap is an almost inconceivably gigantic ice sheet, whose cubic content is hard to fathom. It becomes more tangible when you hear that if it were to melt, sea levels would rise with a total of 7 metres! The Ice Cap covers 80% of Greenland and is the mother of all Greenland’s well-known and famous icebergs. You have a lot of ways to explore the ice in Greenland – you can stand on the ice sheet in Kangerlussuaq, fly across the ice in a helicopter or plane, sail among icebergs in Ilulissat, watch the giant glacier calve in Eqi, and spend hours and hours just looking at the ice in all its many varieties.

Icebergs in the Disco Bay

Geographically speaking, we find ourselves in the vicinity of Ilulissat in Northwestern Greenland (which in fact is located almost at the centre of Greenland’s west coast). The Disco Bay stretches from Aasiaat south of the Disco Island to Saqqaq on the Nuusuaq peninsula. The Disco Bay is home to the Disco Island, the mouth of the Icefjord, the Eqi glacier, the main town Ilulissat and a handful of other towns and villages. With all these highlights, the Disco Bay is the most popular tourist destination in Greenland.
