Learn how to drive your own dogsled in East Greenland and participate in a unique mini-expedition!

Greenland Travel and Destination East Greenland are proud to present a new and unique opportunity for our adventurous guests: Learn how to drive your own dogsled!

First, you spend 2 days learning all about dogsled driving from A-Z, and then you participate in a three day mini-expedition in the magnificent scenery around Tasiilaq. We promise you an ultimate dogsled experience! This trip can be combined with a stay in Iceland.

Day program

Day 1
Isolated on the East Greenland coast lies the small town of Tasiilaq (also known as Ammassalik), which is the setting of this fantastic Greenland trip. In the morning you leave Reykjavik with flight to the airport in Kulusuk. From here the trip continues by helicopter to Tasiilaq where you stay at the town hotel for the next 3 nights.

Day 2-3
On a traditional dogsled trip you are spending most of the time on the dogsled enjoying the beautiful view while the landscape slowly passes by. We want to involve you actively in the stearing of the dogs and the dogsled driving. You will be introduced to the dogsled's historical background, the theory and the working processes associated with dogsled driving. After 1 ½ day of  training we test your skills for fun with a driving test and you will receive a special dog license. The dogsled license gives you the necessary skills to handle and ride a dogsled with 6-8 dogs and also to work as assisting driver on a dogsled with up to 14 dogs.

Our intention is - besides giving you an exciting and positive experience with a the license - also to give you an insight of the East Greenlandic Inuit culture and the ancient mode of transport.

Day 4-6
After 2 fun days of acquiring the license the dogsled adventure awaits, and it is time for you to try out your skills with the dogs out in the wild. You are in the company of an experienced Greenlandic driver, and there are 12-14 dogs in front of the dogsled. On the dogsled expedition you will come around the entire Ammassalik island with its characteristic sharp mountains. You will drive on both sea ice, over land and on the third day even up over the famous Mittivakkat-glacier with visits to the ice cave.

On the first day it goes first northwards and then west to the abandoned settlement Qernertivartivit. To be on the safe sade we bring provisions, but on the first night, where we tent on the ice, you have the opportunity to fish for halibut, catfish and redfish. It is a really good experience, and if you catch something, it is of course also on the menu that evening. Today's distance is approx. 35 kilometers.

On the next day we travel across the island from east to west. Through valleys and deep gorges and over glaciers and passes. The day offers a highly varied dogsled driving. After a beautiful dogsled day we camp at Ukiveralik with an amazing view over the Sermilik icefjord that is fed by one of Greenland's most active glaciers, the Helheim glacier, which is therefore filled with beautiful icebergs. Today's distance is approx. 40 kilometer.

The third day is the climax of the trip, as we on this day continue the dogsled trip up over the Mittavakkat glacier, which is not only exciting and a little hard to reach, but also rewards you with the most beautiful view you can imagine. After lunch at the top of the glacier is goes downwards and southwards to Tasiilaq with arrival late afternoon. Today's distance is approx. 32 kilometer.

Day 7
On the last day of the trip there are no planned activities. You can use the day to rest from the hardships and maybe take the last vacation photos.

Day 8
The Greenland adventure has come to an end. You fly by helicopter to Kulusuk and from there by flight to Reykjavik.
