3 unique sights and sailing with coastal ship

Classic: The “Golden Triangle” of West Greenland

The Classic Golden Triangle of Greenland. One of our bestsellers over years and a very classic tour. A wonderful trip to the triangle of three towns and also coastal ship is included. You expierence all the "must see" of Greenland and the "wow-factor" is high.

You cross the Arctic Circle, get to see musk oxen and the ice cap in Kangerlussuaq, Sisimiut’s beautiful houses that are as small color spots in the rocky landscape and the spectacular ice fjord in Ilulissat with myriads of ice from small cubes to giants in various colors depending on the sun's reflections.

The interurban transport takes place with both aircraft and coastal ship also giving you a unique chance to get an impression of the amazing size of the world’s largest island, which corresponds to the distance from Scotland to the Sahara!

The trip takes place from June to August, which is summer at its best in Greenland with midnight sun and contrasting impressions. Green mountains and white icebergs. Strong sunlight and misty fog. Gentle flower valleys and cool glaciers. Shears that cut through the vast desolate areas. Temperatures are mild and Greenland's national flower Niviarsiaq, bluebells and mountain-batten are busy and beautifully decorate the mountains.

This tour gave us a degree of independence and flexibility, whilst taking care of our overall travel needs. We didn't feel as though we were part of a big tour. We are not attracted to tours that feel highly organised so this was ideal for us.

Itinerary - day for day

With English speaking tour guide
  • DAY 1: Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq - accommodation, welcome meeting (sightseeing)

Flight from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq. During the 4,5 hours flight you can enjoy a light meal and a movie. You have no doubt when you catch the first glimpse of Greenland: Nunataks that pop up amid the huge expanse of ice. The fresh air and the sight of the mountains that surround the airport in Kangerlussuaq is the first things that meet you when you step off the plane.

A guide from our local partner welcomes you at the airport and helps you with the accommodation at Polar Lodge, which is magnificently situated overlooking the steep mountain Køkkenfjeldet and the chain of mountains towards Sisimiut. After you've settled in your room, there is an information meeting where the guide tells of Kangerlussuaq and the many different excursions.

If you bought the excursion package it’s time for a guided sightseeing tour:

    Sightseeing in Kangerlussuaq (optional)

Kangerlussuaq is a former American air base, but today it is the main airport of Greenland. The guide will share exciting stories, starting from the origins of the base, from the Second World War to the Cold War, into a modern international airport.
The area around Kangerlussuaq has Greenland's longest road and here we will experience and see several interesting places and meet the great Greenlandic nature. We drive to the harbour to enjoy views of the beautiful fjord. We drive past Kellyville, a small town for science, 12km from the airport and tour the old base area. We will also visit the village kennel where we'll get better acquainted with Greenlandic sled dogs. We'll have ample opportunity to take in the stunning nature during the scenic drive.

  • DAY 2: Day at your disposal in Kangerlussuaq

    Indlandsisen i Grønland

Excursion to the Inland Ice Cap, point 660 (optional)
Riding a 4WD-bus you come through a beautiful area. Close by the Inland Ice you will pass the Rusell Glacier and a fantastic moraine landscape. At the end of your ride you will walk to and on the ice cap. It is an unforgettable experience to see this enormous world of ice, which gives the gives the saying of “mother nature” a whole new meaning. No matter where you look the ice cap and the horizon seem boundless and the cold from the ice provides the experience with an extra dimension.

During the tour you will see large barren areas surrounded by hills wrapped in snow. Cross your fingers, maybe you will see reindeers and musk oxen on the way.

  • DAY 3: Flight Kangerlussuaq - Sisimiut

    Sisimiut i Grønland

Today we head to Sisimiut, Greenland's second largest town with approx. 5,500 inhabitants. The town is beautifully set amid the rocky landscape with picturesque wooden houses in bright colors.

After checking in at the centrally located Hotel Sisimiut there is an information meeting with a guide from our local partner, who tells a little about the town and the many excursions. The hotel is centrally located so you are close to everything, the town center, the harbour and the beautiful nature and mountains.

    Town tour (optional)
A nice trip where you come a bit closer to knowing the town and hear about how the town  was founded and life today. We pass the open fish and meat market (brættet) and the city hall and visit the old town, where the original colonial buildings from the 1700 century now houses the fascinating and very authentic museum.

View our unique and virtual panorama photos from Sisimiut. It opens up in a new window. Be patient when it is loading.

  • DAY 4: Day at your disposal in Sisimiut

    Sisimiut i Grønland

Sisimiut is a very unspoiled town in Greenland with both historical places, modern life and beautiful nature. The possibilities are numerous – you just have to pick out what suits you best.

    The settlement Assaqutaq and whales
Assaqutaq settlement lies at the foot of Kællingehætten’s south side. It is today used as a summer venue for local schools and is a popular summer resort for the inhabitants of Sisimiut who fish for ammasets. While strolling through the settlement we pass the old fish production factory, the summer camp and the beautiful old church. The sea around the settlement is also a favourite playground for whales (humpback and fin whales) - hopefully one of these giants will give us a spout.

  • DAY 5: Onboard Coastal ship heading north along the west coast

    Sisimiut i Grønland

The day is at your own disposal before heading north in the evening with the coastal ship Sarfaq Ittuk. Visit for example one of the town’s arts and crafts workshops, where the town’s artists produce and sell jewellery and crafts of soapstone, ivory and bone.

If you bought the excursion package you will go on a hike back in time:

    Hike back in time (optional)
Despite of Greenland’s enormous size, people have chosen the same sites for their settlements throughout time. Tele Island, Sallinnguit, is one of those sites of encounter between the ancient and the modern. Several Inuit cultures have inhabited the site intermittently for the past 4,000 years. Even today, you can find artifacts from those ancient settlements side by side with the modern telecommunications installations that have given the island its modern Danish name. Hear the story of the Inuit before the arrival of the Europeans, and of life in the early days of colonisation. See the ruins from different periods and enjoy the beautiful views of the town and the ancient hunting grounds.

There is transfer from Hotel Sisimiut to the harbor and you should check in ½ -1 hour before departure at 9 in the evening, where the course is set for Ilulissat further up north the coast. Sailing in Greenland is a wonderful experience - you experience nature from the first row and may even be lucky enough to see whales in their very own element. So don’t forget camera and binoculars – and keep your ears and nose warm.

  • DAY 6: Calls in the town of Aasiaat and Ilulissat for accomodation at Hotel Arctic****

    Ilulissat Isfjord i Grønland

Breakfast can be enjoyed overlooking the stunning Disko Bay. Before arriving to Ilulissat the coastal ship calls at the beautiful town Aasiaat, located in the southwest corner of the Disko Bay and known for its archipelago, kayaks, whales and – as everywhere else – the pretty colored houses spread with a gentle hand in the hilly landscape.

As the icebergs come closer and closer it is recommended to stand on the deck. The arrival to Ilulissat is a breathtaking encounter with one of nature’s own masterpiece – the floating icebergs. This is an unforgettable sight.

Upon arrival, there is transfer to and check in at the beautifully situated Hotel Arctic****, which lies in the first row to the ice fjord. At the following information meeting you will hear more about the town and the many excursions. Before the welcome dinner in the hotel's delicious restaurant you can relax and explore the landscape right outside the door and especially enjoy the view over the town and the renowned icefjord.

    Cultural historic guided tour (optional)
People might say: “ We can take a walk around the town on our own.” Yes, you probably can, but with the culture-historical walk you will get an enhanced understanding of the Greenlandic culture and history, which will give the other experiences in Greenland a new perspective.

Ilulissat – Jakobshavn - was founded in 1741 and it is today the third biggest town in Greenland with over 4500 inhabitants. The guide will tell you about the history of the city, the Greenlandic culture and the modern life 300 km north of the Arctic Circle. We will visit the fishermen at the harbour and the hunters at their trading post “Brædtet”. We will show you the church and the house where the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen was born.

  • DAY 7: Adventures in and around Ilulissat and UNESCO site Ilulissat Icefiord

    Ilulissat i Grønland

Ilulissat is the Greenlandic word for icebergs and is Greenland's third largest town. Approximately 4500 inhabitants and just as many sled dogs are so lucky to live in this amazing town at the mouth of the 50 kilometer long and UNESCO protected ice fjord Kangia. Ilulissat's location 350 kilometer north of the Arctic Circle means that the midnight sun rules until mid-July. It never gets pitch dark - everything is shrouded in an orange, almost magical glow. The stay in Ilulissat – and Greenland - ends with a lovely farewell dinner at Hotel Arctic on the last night.

Many of the sights can be reached on foot. But we definitely recommend that you join some of the guided tours that require either boat or helicopter.

Hiking trip to the abandoned settlement Sermermiut (optional)
Beautiful Icebergs are the setting for the old settlement of the Sermermiut 1½ kilometers south of Ilulissat. For 4000 years, different Inuit cultures lived in the settlement and today, you can still see the relics which indicate their presence. Hear the story about the Inuit people’s life and traditions before the Europeans came to Greenland, see the ruins and touch the permafrost with your own hands.

On this hike we will pass “kællingekløften” where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Icefiord, before heading back again. During the hike, there will be time to talk about flora, fauna, geoplogy and not least the story behind the omnipresent ice.

  • DAY 8: Adventures in and around Ilulissat and UNESCO site Ilulissat Icefiord

    Eqi gletscheren i Grønland

This day is at your own disposal. Today we recommend:

Daytour to Eqip Sermia - the calving glacier (optional)
Only few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi Glacier, which ends in the fiord 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat. It is possible by boat to get very close to the glacier and experience huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are enormous and the sight of the icebergs, crashing into the water, is breathtaking.

We sail in modern and convenient boats at the excursion to Eqi. The route goes north along the coast passing Bredebugt, the settlement of Oqaatsut and the big fiord system called Pakitsoq, where whales and seals often are seen. Further on through the Ataa Strait, which is surrounded by steepmountains with bird life and waterfalls. Our ice secured boats lie approximately 2 hours in front of the glacier and wait for the ice to calve, while a delicious lunch is served. An all-day excursion, where you will have a good opportunity to be immersed in the experience and the boat trip in the ice filled water.

  • DAY 9: Adventures in and around Ilulissat and UNESCO site Ilulissat Icefiord

    Sejlads ved isfjorden i Grønland

This day is at your own disposal. Perhaps it is time for a relaxing day in the city, write postcards, visit souvenirs shops and relax on the town "square" with a coffee / tea in the cafe.

One of the most popular excursions in Ilulissat is sailing on the Icefiord. So if you have not had enough of sailing, this is an ideal option. The tour lasts approximately 2 hours and can be done during the day or at night under the midnight sun.

  • DAY 10: Adventures in and around Ilulissat and UNESCO site Ilulissat Icefiord

    Ilulissat i Diskobugten i Grønland

This day is at your own disposal. A whale safari among icebergs is one of many recommendations:

Whale Safari - surrounded by icebergs in the Diskobay (optional)
It is a great experience to get real close to large animals like whales. There are 15 kinds of whales in Greenland; three of these stay in Greenland during the winter, the narwhals, the beluga and the bow-head whale (also known as the Greenland right whale). The blue whale and the killer whale are only rarely seen.

During the summer it is normally the humpback, the common minke whale and the fin whale, we see. The whales swim the entire Disco Bay during the summer; sometimes close to the town, sometimes in the ice fiord or up north by the island, Arveprinsens Ejland.  We are in constantly radio contact, between the fishermen and the hunters, is our source of information about the whales and their whereabouts. The humpback with its characteristic fin, is the one we see most of the time.

  • DAY 11: Flight Ilulissat – Kangerlussuaq - Copenhagen

    Ilulissat isfjord i Grønland

Enjoy the last look of the fjord from the aircraft to Kangerlussuaq, before flying onwards to Copenhagen with arrival in the evening.
