The Classic Golden Triangle in West Greenland - north of the Polar Circle
The Classic Golden Triangle of Greenland. One of our bestsellers over years and a very classic tour. A wonderful trip to the triangle of three towns and also coastal ship is included. You expierence all the "must see" of Greenland and the "wow-factor" is high.
You cross the Arctic Circle, get to see musk oxen and the ice cap in Kangerlussuaq, Sisimiut’s beautiful houses that are as small color spots in the rocky landscape and the spectacular ice fjord in Ilulissat with myriads of ice from small cubes to giants in various colors depending on the sun's reflections.
The interurban transport takes place with both aircraft and coastal ship also giving you a unique chance to get an impression of the amazing size of the world’s largest island, which corresponds to the distance from Scotland to the Sahara!
The trip takes place from June to August, which is summer at its best in Greenland with midnight sun and contrasting impressions. Green mountains and white icebergs. Strong sunlight and misty fog. Gentle flower valleys and cool glaciers. Shears that cut through the vast desolate areas. Temperatures are mild and Greenland's national flower Niviarsiaq, bluebells and mountain-batten are busy and beautifully decorate the mountains.

Day 1 Flight Copenhagen - Kangerlussuaq and welcome meeting
Flight from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq. During the 4,5 hours flight you can enjoy a light meal and a movie. You have no doubt when you catch the first glimpse of Greenland: Nunataks that pop up amid the huge expanse of ice. The fresh air and the sight of the mountains that surround the airport in Kangerlussuaq is the first things that meet you when you step off the plane.
A guide from our local partner welcomes you at the airport and helps you with the accommodation at Polar Lodge, which is magnificently situated overlooking the steep mountain Køkkenfjeldet and the chain of mountains towards Sisimiut. After you've settled in your room, there is an information meeting where the guide tells of Kangerlussuaq and the many different excursions.
The afternoon is at your own disposal. An idea might be to go on a trip to the ice cap, which is 30 kilometers from the airport area. The 4 wheel vehicles runs safely on the gravel road and there are fine views of the exciting landscape. If we are lucky we will see musk oxen, reindeer and maybe a lone mountain rabbit.
The encounter with the ice cap is an unforgettable experience. The forces of nature are suddenly very visible and you can feel and almost taste the cold from the ice. En route we pass lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, and delicate clusters of cotton grass and large flowered willow herb.

Day 2 Day at your disposal in Kangerlussuaq
Kangerlussuaqs exciting hinterland invites to a number of fine excursions. On a walk right around the airport area you can see a large, desert-like plan (Fossilsletten) and enjoy the view from Ravneklippen (the raven rock). You can also go on of the popular excursions. And as always when in Greenland remember to enjoy the impressions - the silence, the abundant nature and the endless horizon.
Musk ox safari
The area around Kangerlussuaq and between the rivers just east of the airport are the best places to see the musk ox, which is thriving here in the middle of the Greenland tundra.
Sightseeing in Kangerlussuaq
A good opportunity to hear more about the area's fascinating history dating back to 2nd World War, when Americans built the base under the name Blue West Eight. The area bears signs of having been an American base and is therefore different from the towns along the coast. The atmosphere is perhaps not so nice, but the nature compensates for this in abundance.
Kangerlussuaq Museum
A fine experience at the former U.S. headquarters, which is preserved completely unchanged.
Day 3 flight Kangerlussuaq - Sisimiut
Today we head to Sisimiut, Greenland's second largest town with approx. 5,500 inhabitants. The town is beautifully set amid the rocky landscape with picturesque wooden houses in bright colors.
After checking in at the centrally located Hotel Sisimiut there is an information meeting with a guide from our local partner, who tells a little about the town and the many excursions. The hotel is centrally located so you are close to everything, the town center, the harbour and the beautiful nature and mountains.
Day 4 Day at your disposal in Sisimiut
Sisimiut is a very unspoiled town in Greenland with both historical places, modern life and beautiful nature. The possibilities are numerous – you just have to pick out what suits you best.
Town tour
A nice trip where you come a bit closer to knowing the town and hear about how the town was founded and life today. We pass the open fish and meat market (brættet) and the city hall and visit the old town, where the original colonial buildings from the 1700 century now houses the fascinating and very authentic museum.
Hiking trip back in time
Learn about the story of the Inuit before the Europeans announced their arrival. At Teleøen - Sallinnguit - different Inuit cultures have lived during the last 4000 years and even today you can find objects and ruins that testify their presence. From Teleøen there is the most beautiful view of the town and the old fishing grounds.
The settlement Assaqutaq and whales
Assaqutaq settlement lies at the foot of Kællingehætten’s south side. It is today used as a summer venue for local schools and is a popular summer resort for the inhabitants of Sisimiut who fish for ammasets. While strolling through the settlement we pass the old fish production factory, the summer camp and the beautiful old church. The sea around the settlement is also a favourite playground for whales (humpback and fin whales) - hopefully one of these giants will give us a spout.
Sled dog lecture
Join and hear about the life as a sled dog. The beautiful and strong working animal is used frequently in winter, where it is so lucky to work in the world's most beautiful surroundings.
Sisimiut is a very genuine Greenlandic town where you see dog sleds piled up for the summer, dry fish racks, sled dogs who sunbathe in the rocks and trendy boutiques alongside the exciting museum in the old town.
Day 5 Onboard Coastal ship heading north along the west coast
The day is at your own disposal before heading north in the evening with the coastal ship Sarfaq Ittuk. Visit for example one of the town’s arts and crafts workshops, where the town’s artists produce and sell jewellery and crafts of soapstone, ivory and bone.
There is transfer from Hotel Sisimiut to the harbor and you should check in ½ -1 hour before departure at 9 in the evening, where the course is set for Ilulissat further up north the coast. Sailing in Greenland is a wonderful experience - you experience nature from the first row and may even be lucky enough to see whales in their very own element. So don’t forget camera and binoculars – and keep your ears and nose warm.
Day 6 Calls in the town of Aasiaat and Ilulissat for accomodation at Hotel Arctic****
Breakfast can be enjoyed overlooking the stunning Disko Bay. Before arriving to Ilulissat the coastal ship calls at the beautiful town Aasiaat, located in the southwest corner of the Disko Bay and known for its archipelago, kayaks, whales and – as everywhere else – the pretty colored houses spread with a gentle hand in the hilly landscape.
As the icebergs come closer and closer it is recommended to stand on the deck. The arrival to Ilulissat is a breathtaking encounter with one of nature’s own masterpiece – the floating icebergs. This is an unforgettable sight.
Upon arrival, there is transfer to and check in at the beautifully situated Hotel Arctic****, which lies in the first row to the ice fjord. At the following information meeting you will hear more about the town and the many excursions. Before the welcome dinner in the hotel's delicious restaurant you can relax and explore the landscape right outside the door and especially enjoy the view over the town and the renowned icefjord.
Day 7-10 Adventures in and around Ilulissat and UNESCO site Ilulissat Icefiord
Ilulissat is the Greenlandic word for icebergs and is Greenland's third largest town. Approximately 4500 inhabitants and just as many sled dogs are so lucky to live in this amazing town at the mouth of the 50 kilometer long and UNESCO protected ice fjord Kangia. Ilulissat's location 350 kilometer north of the Arctic Circle means that the midnight sun rules until mid-July. It never gets pitch dark - everything is shrouded in an orange, almost magical glow. The stay in Ilulissat – and Greenland - ends with a lovely farewell dinner at Hotel Arctic on the last night.
Many of the sights can be reached on foot. But we definitely recommend that you join some of the guided tours that require either boat or helicopter.
Cultural historic guided tour
We learn about the town's history, the Greenland culture and the everyday life on a walk through the town.
Hiking trip to the abandoned settlement Sermermiut

Hiking trip along the fjord
We follow the ice fjord and have a chat about the flora, fauna, geology and ice and ice again.
Sailing trip to the ice fjord

Helicopter flights to Ilulissat glacier
Luxury and an unforgettable experience - on a helicopter trip you get right into the heart of the gigantic glacier.
Whale Watching (humpback whales and fin whales)
On a whale safari you will come close to both lots of ice and playful enjoying the peaceful bay.
