12 wonderful days at either hotel or hostel around the amazing Disko Bay. Imagine a sunset reflecting in the ocean water. The horizon turns orange and soft pink. The ice floats in all shapes and the colored houses decorate the coast line.
This is the trip that gives you the feeling of being where no one has been before and takes you into the heart of isolated settlements and towns where life goes on as it always has done with hunting and fishing as a necessary livelihood combined with the more modern Greenland.
The trip begins in Kangerlussuaq, where the ice cap thronez as far as the eye can see and continues to Ilulissat, which is the starting point for trips to the calving glacier Eqi and the settlement Oqaatsut, situated in a fantastic beautiful archipelago with high mountains as a backdrop.
The trip takes place from June to August. Until the middle of July the Disko Bay is shrouded in the glow from the midnight sun and can be seen on evening sailing trips with ice bergs as the ultimate setting.

Day 1 Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq-accommodation-on your own
There is departure with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq and the adventure is now only 4 hours away. Upon arrival you are welcomed by a guide from World of Greenland Arctic Circle, who helps you to check in at Polar Lodge. The lodge is located a stone's throw from the airport, close to shopping facilities and with the great scenery just outside in the beautiful backyard.
Immediately after check in the guide holds an information meeting where you’ll get an impression of the exciting area and excursion ideas for the rest of the afternoon. The former American base takes you on a quick trip back in history with the old barracks, the museum where time almost stands still and the wreckage from a T33A-fighter in Sandflugtsdalen (the sand drift valley).
Kangerlussuaq is also the perfect place to go on a trip to the endless ice cap. At a distance you will get a glimpse of the impressive Russell glacier - a 30-80 m high wall of ice with a river in front. There is a fine chance to see musk oxen - they can however often be mistaken for a big rock.
Day 2 Kangerlussuaq-Ilulissat on your own-welcoming dinner
Today the trip continues to Ilulissat. Upon arrival to Ilulissat you will be picked up by the Hotel Arctic bus and as you approach the hotel you can enjoy the hotel's location high above the town over viewing the famous ice fjord.
At the following information meeting the guide from World of Greenland informs you about the area and the many excursions available either on your own or on guided trips at sea, on land and by air. In the hours before the welcome dinner at Hotel Arctic’s splendid restaurant you can relax and dwell on the amazing sight from the hotel over the ice fjord and the never ending horizon.
Day 3-4 On your own in Ilulissat
You now have 2 days on your own in Ilulissat.
Ilulissat is a lovely and very Greenlandic town that holds both a modern atmosphere and a more traditional lifestyle. Hunting and fishing are paramount and fishing boats jostle for the space with industrial trawlers. Sled dogs and houses in almost all colors adorn the rocky landscape.
The beautiful ice fjord is both the local fishermen's workplace and one of the biggest attractions in Ilulissat. What makes the ice fjord so special is the icebergs and the light that constantly changes the colors of the ice.
But beyond the ice fjord, there are many other ways to experience Knud Rasmussen's hometown. Start for example with a cultural walk and come a little closer to the town in a historical perspective.
It is also ideal to join a hiking trip to the abandoned settlement Sermermiut where ruins testify to past human settlement. A slightly longer hike goes along the fjord and into the wild landscape full of visual impressions.
Or how about a sailing trip among icebergs during the day or evening. The summer is also a perfect time to go on a whale safari. The Disko Bay is a popular playground for the impressive marine mammals.
We can also recommend a helicopter trip that takes you close up to the 7 kilometer wide glacier. Imagine to fly across the huge mountains, lakes, rivers and icebergs – a stunning experience that gives you a super nice view over the protected UNESCO site.
Day 5 By boat to Eqi-accommodation at Ice Camp Eqi
Early morning we go by boat up north to fascinating Eqi glacier – one of Greenland’s unique natural wonders. After a good lunch in front of the Eqi glacier the boat anchors at Ice Camp Eqi where you stay in cabins facing the glacier. The untamed nature is just outside the door and the overwhelming silence broken by the crashing sound from ice calvings can be enjoyed from the terrace.
The 14 cabins offer comfortable luxury, a unique view and delicious meals in Café Victor named after the famous polar explorer Paul-Emile Victor. The modern kitchen is supplied with power from solar cells and neither garbage cans or toilets are being dumped in the area.
Day 6 On your own in Eqi
Today is at your own disposal. We recommend a short hike to the lagoon and glacier or a long hike up to the ice cap, where you can experience the cracks of the ice edge, glacial wells and the dynamic moraine landscape. You can do the short trip without a guide, but on the hike up on the ice we recommend for safety reasons an experienced guide. If you want to participate in guided hiking trips in Eqi it is a good idea to book well in advance from home.
The area has an abundant wildlife and geology. Polar foxes, hares, grouses and sea eagles can often be seen on land and seals swim nearby the camp. When you’re on your own out in the wild and desolate landscape you will undoubtedly get a sense of the spirit of famous Arctic explorers!
Day 7-8 By boat to Oqaatsut-dinner at H8 and back to Ilulissat
Enjoy the morning at your own pace and take a last look at the beautiful glacier view from your cabin. After lunch a boat will bring you to the old whaling settlement Oqaatsut (Rodebay) fantastically located 15 kilometer north of Ilulissat.
Like all other settlements Oqaatsut takes you almost back to Greenland ‘in the old days’. The pace calls for relaxation and meditation and of course exploration of the scenic settlement where only 45 inhabitants live their life with a strong bond to the surrounding nature – and with all modern necessities as well.
After a delicious dinner at Restaurant H8 beautifully situated with a wonderful view to floating icebergs in the Disko Bay you sail back to Ilulissat and Hotel Arctic.
Day 9-11 On your own in Ilulissat
The last 2 days in Ilulissat are at you own disposal. A suggestion is to attend a lecture about the life as a sled dog – including a visit to a flock of summer lazy dogs where you can see, feel and hear these strong working animals. Happy puppies fool around and welcome gladly a friendly pat.
Enjoy the atmosphere in the town that mix old and new. Huge monster cars are parked next to dogsleds. Colored houses in contrast to giant blocks. Racks of dried fish and clothes. Fresh fish at the open market and exciting delicacies at the classy restaurants. Make sure to go for a walk down to the harbor, which in summer exudes activity. Find a quiet place from where you can see the fjord and the beautiful icebergs bathing in sunlight.
