Stay in small settlements and at the unique Glacier Lodge Eqi

Dream Tour in the Disco Bay

12 days to explore the very highlights of the Disco Bay. This tour gives you the feeling of entering a place where nobody has been before you. You will be staying at the Glacier Lodge Eqi – perhaps one of the most beautiful, peaceful and unique places in all of Greenland. Furthermore, we will take you to small settlements and all the must-see sights of West Greenland.
The tour begins in Kangerlussuaq – the gateway to Greenland – and just 25 kilometres from the immense Ice Cap. You will get the chance to actually walk on the Ice Cap.

The tour will end with a three-day stay on the Disco Island. We will being staying in the old town Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), which used to be a place for whale hunters. The town is surrounded by steep mountains and pretty vegetation. The Disco Island offers a number of great walks, and you can visit the small and isolated town Kangerluk with only 42 inhabitants.

The trip is available from June to August during which the summer is intense and warm, and the Disco Bay is adorned in colours of the midnight sun.

What do the guests say

I lost my heart to Greenland!

M. Friis

Participant at Dream Tour in the Disco Bay, 2013

I have been in Greenland 7 times and I have lost my heart to this amazing country. 11 years ago I was on a boat trip to Eqi and I thought: "Here I wood like to stay for som days". When I saw that they had built huts on the spot I had to go! It has been a fantastic tour and the guides have been very helpfull and they knew a lot about Greenland.

Itinerary - day by day

With English speaking tour guide
  • DAY 1: Copenhagen - Kangerlussuaq, accommodation and time on your own

    Indlandsisen og moskusokser i Grønland

There is departure with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq and the adventure is now only 4 hours away. Upon arrival you are welcomed by a guide from World of Greenland Arctic Circle, who helps you to check in at Hotel Kangerlussuaq. The hotel is located in the airport building, close to shopping facilities and with the great scenery just outside in the beautiful backyard.

Immediately after check in the guide holds an information meeting where you’ll get an impression of the exciting area and excursion ideas for the rest of the afternoon. The former American base takes you on a quick trip back in history with the old barracks, the museum where time almost stands still and the wreckage from a T33A-fighter in Sandflugtsdalen (the sand drift valley).

    Ice Cap Point 660 (optional)
Kangerlussuaq is also the perfect place to go on a trip to the endless ice cap. At a distance you will get a glimpse of the impressive Russell glacier - a 30-80 m high wall of ice with a river in front. There is a fine chance to see musk oxen - they can however often be mistaken for a big rock.

Ice Cap Point 660 is a part of the Excursion package which can be ordered in the booking flow. See Prices and details.

  • DAY 2: Kangerlussuaq - Ilulissat, on your own and welcoming dinner

Zions kirken i Ilulissat i Grønland

Today, the trip continues to Ilulissat by flight. Upon arrival at Ilulissat, you will be picked up by Hotel Arctic's bus and as you approach the hotel, you are able to enjoy the hotel's location high above the town overlooking the famous Ice Fjord.

At the following information meeting, the guide from World of Greenland informs you about the area and the many excursions available either on your own or on guided trips at sea, on land or by air. Before sitting down for the welcome dinner at Hotel Arctic’s splendid restaurant, take some time to relax and dwell on the spectacular view of the Ice Fjord and the seemingly never-ending horizon.

If you are staying at the hostel, you will be picked up at the airport by World of Greenland and taken to the hostel, which is centrally located in Ilulissat. The information meeting will take place shortly after arrival. You cannot buy meals at the hostel, but there are good kitchen facilities available for you to use.

Ilulissat is the third biggest city in Greenland with about 4,500 citizens. Ilulissat is a great mixture of modern life and traditional Greenlandic living. You can spend the rest of the day inhaling the fantastic atmosphere, the outstanding view and the incredibly fresh air. If you have purchased the Excursion Package, you can look forward to a cultural city walk:

    Cultural historic guided tour (optional)
Some people might think: “we can just take a walk around the town on our own.” And yes, you probably could, but with the guided cultural historic tour you will get an enhanced understanding of the Greenlandic culture and history, which will give all your other experiences in Greenland a new perspective.

Ilulissat – Jakobshavn – was founded in 1741 and, today, it is the third largest town in Greenland with more than 4,500 inhabitants. The guide will tell you about the history of the town, the Greenlandic culture and contemporary life 300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. We will visit the fishermen at the harbour and the hunters at their trading post “Brættet”. We will show you the church and famous explorer Knud Rasmussen's place of birth.

  • DAY 3: Explore Ilulissat on your own

Zions kirken i Ilulissat i Grønland

You now have 2 days on your own in Ilulissat.
Ilulissat is a lovely and very Greenlandic town that holds both a modern atmosphere and a more traditional lifestyle. Hunting and fishing are paramount and fishing boats jostle for the space with industrial trawlers. Sled dogs and houses in almost all colours adorn the rocky landscape.

The beautiful Ice Fjord is both the local fishermen's workplace and one of the biggest attractions in Ilulissat. It is the abundance of icebergs and the light, which constantly changes the colour of the ice, that makes the Ice Fjord so special.
If you have purchased the Excursion Package, you can look forward to an unforgettable experience in the evening:

    Evening/midnight sailing among icebergs (optional)
The midnight/evening sun makes the icebergs glow in a unique play of colours that people return to experience again and again. Midnight sun in Ilulissat lasts from May 21st to July 24th.

Sailing during the night with the sun still shining is a fantastic and unusual experience. Almost every visitor to Ilulissat chooses to go on this boat trip among the icebergs at least once. Every day, more than 40 million ton of ice flow out into the fjord. The floating icebergs are gigantic, sometimes measuring more than 100 metres wide and long – and with a height of more than 100 metres above the water surface as well. These giants gather at the end of the fjord providing you with a great opportunity to sail among them.

The icebergs are a wonderful sight in every kind of weather; in the sunshine the contrasts are very clear. The blue shades are very beautiful, when it is cloudy and the midnight sun casts a unique glow on the icebergs during the night. Taking the boat trip on a bright night is definitely an extraordinary experience.

You should not miss out on this exceptional experience when visiting Ilulissat.

  • DAY 4: Explore Ilulissat on your own

    Ilulissat Isfjord i Grønland

Another day on your own in Ilulissat. If you have purchased the Excursion Package, you can join a hiking trip to the abandoned Sermermiut settlement:

The old settlement at the Ice Fjord (optional)
Beautiful icebergs provide the setting for the old settlement of Sermermiut 1.5 kilometres south of Ilulissat. For 4,000 years, different Inuit cultures lived in the settlement and, today, you can still see the relics, which indicate their presence. Hear the story about the life of the Inuit people and their traditions before the Europeans came to Greenland. See the ruins and touch the permafrost with your own hands.

On this hike, we will pass “kællingekløften” where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Ice Fjord, before heading back again. During the hike, there will be time to talk about flora, fauna, geology and not least the story behind the omnipresent ice.

  • DAY 5: By boat to Eqi – accommodation at Glacier Lodge Eqi

Ice Camp Eqi ved Eqi gletscheren i Grønland

Early in the morning we will travel north by boat to the fascinating Eqi glacier – one of Greenland’s unique natural wonders. After a good lunch in front of the Eqi glacier, the boat anchors at Glacier Lodge Eqi where you will staying in cabins facing the glacier. The untamed nature is just outside the door and from the terrace you can take in the overwhelming silence, which is only broken by the crashing sound from ice calvings.

The 14 cabins offer comfortable luxury, a unique view and delicious meals in Café Victor, named after the famous Arctic explorer Paul-Emile Victor. The modern kitchen gets its power supply from solar panels, which is just one of many environmentally conscious initiatives at the hotel.

(Please note: For trips departing on June 16th, the stay at Glacier Lodge Eqi starts on day 6 and ends on day 8)

  • DAY 6: Explore Eqi on your own

    Eqi gletscheren i Grønland

Today is at your own disposal. We recommend a short hike to the lagoon and glacier or a longer hike to the Ice Cap where you can experience cracks in the ice edge, glacial wells and the dynamic moraine landscape. You can do the short trip without a guide, but for the longer hike we recommend using an experienced guide – for your own safety. If you want to go on guided hiking trips in Eqi, it is a good idea to book well in advance from home.

The area has an abundant wildlife and geology. Polar foxes, hares, grouses and sea eagles are often seen on land while seals swim near the camp. When you are on your own in the wild and desolate landscape you will undoubtedly get a sense of walking in the footsteps of famous Arctic explorers!

  • DAY 7: Glacier Lodge Eqi and sailing back to Ilulissat

    Glacier Lodge Eqi

Another day of waking up to a fantastic view. Enjoy noon at Glacier Lodge Eqi. After lunch, the boat will take you back to Ilulissat where you will arrive in the early evening. Accommodation at Hotel Arctic again.

  • DAY 8: Looking for whales

    Hvaler i Grønland

This is the last day in Ilulissat. If you have purchased the excursion package, you will be going on a whale safari.

    Whale safari among icebergs (optional)
"Whale ahead". Suddenly the sea is filled with tail fins and glistening bodies, which rise towards the sky. It makes you jump the first time one of these magnificent mammals tumbles forward, greeting you with a spout.
Many different species of whale can be seen along Greenland's coasts. And it is unmistakable when a whale in the vicinity, as they make their presence known by coming up to the surface to breathe and consequently send spouts of water vapour into the air at a speed of several hundred kilometres per hour; quite an astounding sight!

Guests at Hotel Arctic will enjoy a wonderful farewell dinner at Restaurant Ulo.

  • DAY 9: Travelling by boat to the Disco Island – perhaps walking to Kuannit

    Basaltsøjler på Diskoøen i Grønland

Early in the morning a small ferry will take you from Ilulissat to the volcano island Disco Island, about 70 kilometres away. As you get closer to the island, you will see the majestic mountains, which rise a thousand meters from the surface of the ocean. At the top of the mountain, the giant glacier "Sermersuaq" is located and it covers all of the west side of the Disco Island.

After arriving in the small town Qeqertarsuaq late in the afternoon, you will be accommodated either at the hotel or at the hostel depending on your choice. A local guide will welcome you either place.

You have the days on the Disco Island to yourself but it is a small place, so if you do not wish to buy the excursion package, we recommend you to check the options at and order excursions prior to your arrival.

If you have purchased the Excursion Package, you will enjoy a guided walk to Kuannit:

    Walk to Kuannit (optional)
Kuannit offers a lot of experiences. See the hexagonal lava structures, created by the magma, which was emitted from the underground millions of years ago. The quick cooling of the lava has resulted in the organic sculptures.
The area around Kuannit is very fertile with a lot of different flowers and tasty angelicas.

  • DAY 10: Explore the Disco Island on your own – perhaps join excursion to the Kangerluk settlement

    Godhavn i Grønland

This day is your own disposal too. We have some suggestions for you to spend the day:

    Kangerluk (Diskofjord - optional)
This is a full-day excursion to the biggest fjord on the Disco Island, Kangerluk. We sail west and pass Kilit and the steep blue mountain with lots of birdlife and into the Kangerluk fjord where the small settlement with the same name lies. Here, you will get an authentic sense of life in a small settlement.

Kangerluk is located about 35 kilometres north of Qeqertarsuaq in the biggest fjord complex of the Disco Island, surrounded by mountains. Kangerluk has about 65 inhabitants and has a post office, a shop, a fish factory as well as a small school, which is also used as a church.

We will eat lunch in the mountains with a spectacular view of the fjord. On our way home, we will pass by the old radio station Nipissat, which is now closed. After spending some lovely hours in the silent and outstanding nature, we will sail back to Qeqertarsuaq.

Dog sledding in the summer (optional)
Summer dog sledding at the Lyngmark Glacier is also an option when you visit the Disco Island. For many years it has been popular for people with dog sledding dreams to visit the Lyngmark Glacier. However, the condition of the snow at the glacier has been so poor that we at Greenland Travel no longer recommend or sell this tour. If you want to go anyway, you can enquire about the conditions at the local turist information. If the snow is good, you can book the trip while on the Disco Island. Regardless, the walk to the glacier is very beautiful - but also quite strenuous.

Please note: These excursions are not a part of the Excursion Package and cannot be booked in advance. They can only be booked in Qeqertarsuaq/Godhavn.

  • DAY 11: Boat trip to Aasiaat and the archipelago

    Fangere i Grønland

After spending three lovely days on the Disco Island, the journey continues by boat to Aasiaat after we have had lunch. Aasiaat is situated among islands in the southwestern parts of the Disco Bay. The boat will arrive in Aasiaat in the middle of the afternoon, and here you will be accommodated at the lovely seamen's home.

After check-in, a nice afternoon boat trip will take you to the Aasiaat archipelago. We will be visiting the place where whale hunters for generations have pulled whales ashore to be cut up. We will see the hundreds of whalebones lying in the clear, shallow water. Then we continue along to Aasiaat's small hot springs where you will also see vigorous vegetation. During the tour, coffee and tea will be served.

  • DAY 12: Flight Aasiaat - Kangerlussuaq and Copenhagen

    Ilulissat Isfjord i Grønland

We fly from Aasiaat to Kangerlussuaq and from there on to Copenhagen. We will arrive in Copenhagen in the evening due to time difference. Denmark is four hours ahead of Greenland.
