Stay in small settlements and unique Glacier Lodge Eqi

Dream Tour in the Disko Bay

12 days to explore the very highlights of the Disco Bay. this tour gives you the feeling of being where no one else has been before you. You stay at the Glacier Lodge Eqi - perhaps one of the most beautiful, peaceful and unique places in the entire Greenland. Furthermore we take you to small settlements and all the "must see" sights in West Greenland.

The tour starts in Kangerlussuaq - the gateway to Greenland - and only 25 kilometres from the gigantic Inland Ice Cap. You get the chance to actually stand on the Ice Cap.

As something new in 2014 we end this tour with three days at the Disco Island. We will stay in the old town Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), which used to be a place for whale hunters. The town is surrended by steep mountains and very nice vegetation. The Disco Island offers a number of great walks, and you can visit the small and isolated town Kangerluk with only 42 residents.

You travel in the period from June to August where the summer is intense and warm and the Disco Bay is painted in colours of the midnigt sun.

I have been in Greenland 7 times and I have lost my heart to this amazing country. 11 years ago I was on a boat trip to Eqi and I thought: "Here I wood like to stay for som days". When I saw that they had built huts on the spot I had to go! It has been a fantastic tour and the guides have been very helpfull and they knew a lot about Greenland.

Itinerary - day for day

With English speaking tour guide
  • DAY 1: Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq-accommodation-on your own
    Indlandsisen og moskusokser i Grønland

There is departure with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq and the adventure is now only 4 hours away. Upon arrival you are welcomed by a guide from World of Greenland Arctic Circle, who helps you to check in at Hotel Kangerlussuaq. The hotel is located in the airport building, close to shopping facilities and with the great scenery just outside in the beautiful backyard.

Immediately after check in the guide holds an information meeting where you’ll get an impression of the exciting area and excursion ideas for the rest of the afternoon. The former American base takes you on a quick trip back in history with the old barracks, the museum where time almost stands still and the wreckage from a T33A-fighter in Sandflugtsdalen (the sand drift valley).

Kangerlussuaq is also the perfect place to go on a trip to the endless ice cap. At a distance you will get a glimpse of the impressive Russell glacier - a 30-80 m high wall of ice with a river in front. There is a fine chance to see musk oxen - they can however often be mistaken for a big rock.
  • DAY 2: Kangerlussuaq-Ilulissat on your own-welcoming dinner

Today the trip continues to Ilulissat. Upon arrival to Ilulissat you will be picked up by the Hotel Arctic bus and as you approach the hotel you can enjoy the hotel's location high above the town over viewing the famous ice fjord.

At the following information meeting the guide from World of Greenland informs you about the area and the many excursions available either on your own or on guided trips at sea, on land and by air. In the hours before the welcome dinner at Hotel Arctic’s splendid restaurant you can relax and dwell on the amazing sight from the hotel over the ice fjord and the never ending horizon.

If you are staying at the hostel, you will be picked up by "World of Greenland" and you will be accommodated at the hostel which lies central in Ilulissat. The information meeting will take place shortly after arrival. You can't by food at the hostel, but there are good kitchen facilities.

Ilulissat is the third biggest city in Greenland with about 4500 residents. Ilulissat is a great mixture of modern life and trditional greenlandic living. You can spend the rest of the day inhaling the fantastic atmosphere, the outsatnding view and the very fresh air.

  • DAY 3: On your own in Ilulissat

Zions kirken i Ilulissat i Grønland

You now have 2 days on your own in Ilulissat.
Ilulissat is a lovely and very Greenlandic town that holds both a modern atmosphere and a more traditional lifestyle. Hunting and fishing are paramount and fishing boats jostle for the space with industrial trawlers. Sled dogs and houses in almost all colors adorn the rocky landscape.

The beautiful ice fjord is both the local fishermen's workplace and one of the biggest attractions in Ilulissat. What makes the ice fjord so special is the icebergs and the light that constantly changes the colors of the ice. But beyond the ice fjord, there are many other ways to experience Knud Rasmussen's hometown. Start for example with a cultural walk and come a little closer to the town in a historical perspective. The walk i part of the excursion package, and if you bought it you can also look forward to an unforgettable experience in the evening:

    Evening/midnight sailing among icebergs
The midnight/evening sun gives the icebergs a unique play of colours that people return to experience again and again. Midnight sun in Ilulissat lasts from May 21st to July 24th.

Sailing during the night with the sun still shining is a fantastic and unusual experience. Almost every visitor in Ilulissat choose to try this boat trip among the icebergs at least once. More than 40 million ton of ice ice flow out into the fiord 24 hours a day. The result is gigantic icebergs, which can be more than 100 metres on each side and with a height on more than 100 metres above the water surface. These giants strand at the end of the fiord, and that gives a good opportunity to sail among them.

The icebergs are beautiful every kind of weather; in the sunshine the contrasts are very clear, the blue shades are very beautiful, when it is cloudy and the midnight sun casts a unique glow on the icebergs during the night. The boat trip at bright night is definitely an extraordinary experience.

An exceptional experience, you do not want to be without, while visiting Ilulissat.

  • DAY 4: On your own in Ilulissat
    Ilulissat Isfjord i Grønland

Another day on your own in Ilulissat. It is ideal to join a hiking trip to the abandoned settlement Sermermiut where ruins testify to past human settlement. A slightly longer hike goes along the fjord and into the wild landscape full of visual impressions.

Or how about a sailing trip among icebergs during the day or evening. The summer is also a perfect time to go on a whale safari. The Disko Bay is a popular playground for the impressive marine mammals.

We can also recommend a helicopter trip that takes you close up to the 7 kilometer wide glacier. Imagine to fly across the huge mountains, lakes, rivers and icebergs – a stunning experience that gives you a super nice view over the protected UNESCO site.

  • DAY 5: By boat to Eqi-accommodation at Glacier Lodge Eqi

Ice Camp Eqi ved Eqi gletscheren i Grønland

Early morning we go by boat up north to fascinating Eqi glacier – one of Greenland’s unique natural wonders. After a good lunch in front of the Eqi glacier the boat anchors at Glacier Lodge Eqi where you stay in cabins facing the glacier. The untamed nature is just outside the door and the overwhelming silence broken by the crashing sound from ice calvings can be enjoyed from the terrace.

The 14 cabins offer comfortable luxury, a unique view and delicious meals in Café Victor named after the famous polar explorer Paul-Emile Victor. The modern kitchen is supplied with power from solar cells and neither garbage cans or toilets are being dumped in the area.

  • DAY 6: On your own in Eqi

    Eqi gletscheren i Grønland

Today is at your own disposal. We recommend a short hike to the lagoon and glacier or a long hike up to the ice cap, where you can experience the cracks of the ice edge,  glacial wells and the dynamic moraine landscape. You can do the short trip without a guide, but on the hike up on the ice we recommend for safety reasons an experienced guide. If you want to participate in guided hiking trips in Eqi it is a good idea to book well in advance from home.

The area has an abundant wildlife and geology. Polar foxes, hares, grouses and sea eagles can often be seen on land and seals swim nearby the camp. When you’re on your own out in the wild and desolate landscape you will undoubtedly get a sense of the spirit of famous Arctic explorers!

  • DAY 7: Glacier Lodge Eqi and boat back to Ilulissat

    Glacier Lodge Eqi

Another day where you wake up to a fantastic view. Enjoy noon in Glacier Lodge Eqi. After lunch the boat takes you back to Ilulissat, where you will arrive in the early evening. Accomodation i Hotel Arctic again.

  • DAY 8: Looking for whales

    Hvaler i Grønland

This is the last day in Ilulissat. If you bought the excursion package you are going on a whale safari.

    Whale safari amongst icebergs
"Whale ahead". Suddenly the sea is filled with tail fins and glistening bodies, which rise towards the sky. It makes you jump the first time one of these magnificent mammals tumbles forward with a spout-greeting to those waiting patiently on deck.

Many different species of whale can be seen along Greenland's coasts. And you are left in no doubt when there is a whale in the vicinity, as when it comes up to the surface to breathe, it blasts its breath through the water and air at a speed of several hundred kilometres per hour; a quite astounding sight!

Guests at Hotel Arctic will enjoy a wonderful farewell dinner at the Restaurant Ulo.

  • DAY 9: By boat to the Disco Island - maybe walk to Kuannit

    Basaltsøjler på Diskoøen i Grønland

Early in the morning a smalle ferry takes you from Ilulissat by to the vulcano island Disco Island, about 70 km away. As you get closer to the island you will see the majestic mountains which rises thousand meters from the surface og the ocean. At the top of the mountain the giant glacier "Sermersuaq" lies - it covers all of the west side of the Disco Island.

After arrival late noon in the small town Qeqertarsuaq you will be accomodated either at the hotel or the hostel depending on your choise. A local guide will welcome you.

The days at Disco Island is your own, but it is a small place, so if you did not by the excursion package we reccomend you to check the options at www.lyngmark.gl and order excursions before you arrive.

If you bought the excursion package, you will enjou a guided walk to Kuannit:

    Walk to Kuannit
Kuannit offers a lot of experiences. See how the lava spouted from the underground millions of years ago, and after beeing cooled down quickly it pulled together and cracked into varius sculptures of lava with hexagonal structure. The area around Kuannit is very vigorous with a lot of different flowers and tasting angelicas.

  • DAY 10: On your own in Disco Island - maybe excursion to the settlement Kangerluk

    Godhavn i Grønland

This day you are on your own. This is a couple of things you could do:

    Kangerluk (Diskofjord)
This is a day excursion to the biggest fiord at the Disco Island, Kangerluk. We sail west and pass Kilit and the steep blue mountain with lots of birds and into the fiord Kangerluk, where the small settlement with the same name, Kangerluk, lies. Here you will get a feeling of life in a small settlement.

Kangerluk lies about 35 km north of Qeqertarsuaq in the biggest fiord complex at the Disco Island, sorrounded by mountains. Kangerluk has about 65 residents, and they have a postoffice, a shop, a fish factory and a small school which is also used as a church.

We will have lunch in the mountains with a view to the fiord. On our way home we pass by the old (now closed) radiostation Nipissat. After some lovely hours in silence and outstanding nature we sail back to Qeqertarsuaq.

    Dog sledding in the summer
Summer dog sledding at the Lyngmark Glacier is also an option when you visit the Disco Island. In many years it has been popular for people with dog sledding dreams to visit the Lyngmark Glacier. In the past few years the snow at the glacier has been in such bad conditions that we in Greenland Travel no longer recommend and sell this tour. If you want to go anyway you can ask about the conditions at the local turistinformation - if it is good you can order it while you are in Disco Island. Anyhow the walk to the glacier is very beautiful - but also strenuous.

Please note: These excursions are not a part of the excursion package and can not be booked in advance. They can be booked in Qeqertarsuaq/Godhavn.

  • DAY 11: Boat to Aasiaat and trip to the archipelago

    Fangere i Grønland

After three lovely days at the Disco Island the journey will continue by boat to Aasiaat after lunchtime. Aasiaat is situated among islands in the southwestern parts of the Disco Bay. The boat will arrive in Aasiaat in the middle of the afternoon, and you will be accomodated in the lovely seamen's home.

After check in we arranged a nice afternoon boat trip in Aasiaat archipelago. We visit the place where whale hunters in generations pulled the whales ashore to be cut up. We will see the houndreds of whale bones lying in the low and clear water. After visiting the whale bones we sail along to Aasiaats small hot springs where you will also see vigorous vegetation. Coffee and tea are served on the tour.

  • DAY 12: Flight Aasiaat - Kangerlussuaq and Copenhagen

    Ilulissat Isfjord i Grønland

We fly from Aasiaat to Kangerlussuaq and further on to Copenhagen. We arrive in the evening in Copenhagen due to time difference of four hours. Denmark is four hours ahead of Greenland.
