EXCURSIONS RECOMMENDED

Tour1161:ThetreasuresoftheDiskoBay

This journey is so full of beauty and fantastic snapshots and you should prepare yourself for three wonderful places: Ilulissat - the birthplace of Knud Rasmussen, the settlement of Saqqaq and the town of Qeqertarsuaq on the very unique Disko Island.

Saqqaq is five hours of sailing away from Ilulissat. You can spot the settlement an hour before arrival and the last part of the boat trip is done criss-crossing in between huge icebergs. If you’re inboard, you might suddenly see a shadow – not from a cloud, but from a berg of ice.

Saqqaq is an oasis of lakes and roaring rivers – perfect for hiking. You’ll be staying in the house of the former settlement official, the late, legendary Hannibal, beautifully situated with a view to the bay. Here, time really stands still and you automatically absorb the unique nature. As you’ll be staying in Saqqaq for one week, you’ll really get close to this small society and become a part of the every day life in a well functioning Greenlandic settlement. One week goes way too fast in these surroundings and soon you’re on your way back through the Disko Bay to Ilulissat.

Ilulissat is an exceptionally warm meeting between the old and new Greenland. A hike to the former ancient settlement of Sermermiut at the famous Kangia Icefjord is a must - and then, of course,  there’s the ice. The biggest attraction! It is impossible not to be dazzled by the grandeur of the ice, the colors and the light.

A few days later, the boat is headed towards Qeqertarsuaq on the Disko Island – one step closer to paradise. The island is of volcanic origin with incredibly fascinating rock formations and a rich flora. The island is perfect for lots of experiences and activities. Hiking, botanizing, summer dogsledding, small paths, roaring rivers and the breathtaking endless horizon.

Until the end of July the midnight sun stands high on the sky 24/7, giving it all a touch of magic and adventure. Almost too good to be true!
