The great adventure on foot around the Ammassalik island
"In Ammassalik district are you in the very heart of East Greenland's exceptional beauty, and in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled arctic areas in the world. The district is a mosaic of steep dramatic mountains, countless lakes, rivers, waterfalls, glaciers and green valleys. Ammassalik has always radiated a purity and ferocity that has overwhelmed and fascinated visitors at all times. "
Destination East Greenland.
Day program
Day 1-2
We start in Iceland, which is the natural gateway to East Greenland. We fly from Copenhagen to Keflavik and go by bus to the capital Reykjavik, where we stay at Guesthouse Borgatun for 2 nights.
Despite its remoteness Reykjavik is a truly vibrant city with many opportunities to go to museums, shopping at both malls and small designer boutiques and dine at exquisite restaurants.
Day 2
Explore Iceland a little closer on your own.
The tour 'The Golden Circle' is extremely popular including the waterfall Gullfoss, the spouting springs at Geysir and Thingvellir National Park, where you see the cracks between Europe and North America's continental plates.
If you are to the more extreme, you can on a day excursion from Reykjavik both raft or take a trip on a glacier with an instructor.
Day 3
Then we are on to Greenland. We fly from Reykjavik to Kulusuk and then by helicopter to the beautiful small town Tasiilaq. Here we stay at Hotel Ammassalik which has the most beautiful view over the town and the vast desert landscape.
The local support team welcomes you, checks the equipment and reviews the routes in preparation for the trekking adventure that starts next morning.
Day 4
Our support team takes care of the transport of luggage, tents, provisions, etc. We can therefore take off with light day backpacks. Every day throughout the trip, we have this luxury, which makes the pleasure of the mountain trekking much easier and comfortable, and we can instead use the energy to enjoy the wild nature of Greenland.
On the first day of the trekking we walk along the Sermilik path westward to the coast by the foot of the beautiful Mittivakkat glacier, where the first night's camp is located.
Day 5
The entire next day we spend on the Mittivakkat glacier. The successful adventure race 'Arctic Team Challenge' took place in 2001-2007 in this area, so the guides know the glacier in and out. It is impressive and completely breathtaking to walk on the Mittivakkat with the guide.
Day 6-7
We trek northwards along the Sermilik fjord which with hundreds of floating icebergs from the Helhiem Glacier is an impressive sight. We pass several small rivers, so if you have a fishing rod, dinner is saved? In the afternoon on day 7 we reach the narrow strait Ikasagtivaq. By boat we are transferred to the settlement Tiniteqilaq where we stay overnight.
Day 8
A welcomed day of rest. If you like, the tour guide gladly takes a walk with you in the area, but the day can also be used to rest and get a feeling of life in a small primitive settlement far from the beaten track.
Day 9
We sail back to the Ammassalik island and now walk eastward through Kuugarmiit Aqqutaat valley surrounded by high and steep mountains until we reach the little fjord Imiilaa, where the camp is set up for the night.
Day 10-11
The trek southwards on the island's eastern side is beautiful, varied and demanding. We pass high pass and smaller glaciers and stay at Sammileq before reaching Nordfjord after the last demanding trekking day. From Nordfjord we sail back to Tasiilaq - and the waiting hotel beds.
Day 12
The day in Tasiilaq is at your disposal and perhaps a 'buffer day' if the weather has forced us to take an extra day in the mountains.
Use the day to enjoy East Greenland for the last time. Maybe you could take a sailing trip among the beautiful icebergs, or visit the town museum housed in the old church.
Day 13-14
Back it goes to Iceland and Reykjavik, where we again stay at Guesthouse Borgatun. Few are the tourists who leave Iceland without having enjoyed a wellness bath in the famous Blue Lagoon, which simply must be experienced - and enjoyed. We make a stop at the Blue Lagoon on the way to Keflavik on the last day.
