EXCURSIONS RECOMMENDED

SouthGreenlandinallit'sglory

On this guided voyage you will experience the full range of South Greenland with everything this implies by ways of a spellbinding nature as well as colourful culture.

We have included all of the most thrilling excursions in this package so all you have to do is take it all in and enjoy. All accommodation is in hotel and you will get the opportunity to try many specialties from the Greenlandic kitchen. The tour is accompanied by at tour guide.

Day 1, Saturday
Departure in the morning from Copenhagen to Narsarsuaq. Reception by your tour guide. Check-in at the Hotel Narsarsuaq for 2 nights. Excursion to the settlement Qassiarsuk.

Narsarsuaq is the base for the first days. We are in the middle of the ancient Norse realm and Qassiarsuk is the very place where Greenland’s Norwegian colonizer Erik the Red first settled. The ruins and the reconstructed Viking farm as well as the church afford a fascinating insight into past life in the region.

Day 2, Sunday
Excursion to the beautiful Flower Valley. From Narsarsuaq the beautiful Flower Valley stretches toward the ice cap with its overwhelming profusion of flowers and babbling brooks. If you are able-footed it is well worth the effort to climb the steep gradient at the end of the valley in order to reach the plateau with its breathtaking view of the ice cap. In the evening we enjoy a nice dinner in the restaurant.

Day 3, Monday
Sightseeing in Narsarsuaq with remnants of the former American Military Base. Visit to the museum. You are told the interesting story of the first settlers in Greenland, Eric The Red, about the Eskimos and the military story of the area.

Departure later that day for the town Narsaq. This is a three hour sailing trip where you sail quietly among icebergs of all colours, sizes and shapes.

Accommodation at Hotel Narsaq. Your guide will give you a short introduction to the area during sightseeing in the town.

Day 4, Tuesday
Excursion to the so-called Kvanefjeld
, which is a beautiful mountain. Kvanefjeld offers exciting minerals and precious gemstones. The most famous one is the Tigtupit which is found only one more place in the world.

If we have time in the afternoon we will visit the local museum. In the evening we will enjoy a dinner in the restaurant “Klara” with Greenlandic buffet and display of the national costume.

Day 5, Wednesday
Today we recommend you to go on a 5-6 hours boat trip to the Inland Ice Cap in the Bredefjord. You can sail right up to the ice cap by boat and step unto land on an isthmus. The ice has withdrawn and on some days you can walk right up and pat the ice.

On your way you pass by a spectacular bird cliff, a waterfall and many amazing icebergs. Lunch is enjoyed onboard the boat. As an alternative the day can be spend on sightseeing or easy hiking in the area.

Day 6, Thursday
Last stop on the journey is Qaqortoq, South Greenland’s largest city. The city tour centres on artist Aka Høegh who has embellished the city’s mountain sides.

A visit has been included to the Greenland Tannery where sealskin is transformed into beautiful furs. We go by boat from Narsaq to Qaqortoq however we shall make a stop on the way before we reach Qaqortoq.

We sail by Qaqortoq and reach the church of Hvalsø, the greatest Norse ruin, and Upernaviarsuk where blossoming gardens and greenhouses attest to research into Greenlandic agriculture. Accommodation in Qaqortoq at the Hotel Qaqortoq.

Day 7, Friday
Qaqortoq means ”the white”.
The pack ice dominates, ice floe next to ice floe, which during some spring and summer months hamper the sailing in the South Greenlandic seas.

The town is the largest in South Greenland with a population of 3.400, of which 300 live in the three villages close by.

In the noon the guide will take you on sightseeing in the town. En route we will visit the local museum, the open fish market and Great Greenland.

The afternoon is free at your disposal. If the groups wish an easy hiking trip around the so-called Big Lake can be arranged. Time has also been set aside for exploring the city on your own if you do not choose to hike around the lake. An option is also to go on a boat trip to the hot springs of Uunartoq.

In the evening a fare-well dinner is arranged in a restaurant located in an old historical building.

Day 8, Saturday
Departure with helicopter and a 20 minutes flight to Narsarsuaq. During the flight you will have an unforgettable view over the fjord and the floating ice bergs.

From Narsarsuaq to Copenhagen with arrival in the evening.
