Millennia of different traditions and cultures -
East Greenland and Iceland up close!
Despite all the similarities - strong traditions, an unbreakable bond with nature, a strong culture and the combination of old and new - one can hardly imagine two more different destinations than Iceland and East Greenland. Iceland is the cradle of democracy with the world's oldest parliament, while East Greenland still bears traces of the ancient Inuit traditions. It is less than 125 years ago that the East Greenlandic Inuit first met the ‘white man’. Here you get the opportunity to get a close up picture of two very different cultures.
Day program
Day 1-3
You fly from Copenhagen to Keflavik and then stay in Reykjavik at Guesthouse Borgartun. Reykjavik is the epitome of pulses, shopping malls, delicious restaurants and exciting shops. Iceland's vibrant underground opens up for a lot of nice excursions. Reykjavik offers numerous hot baths, and it is now, you have to experience the Golden Circle, which consists of three wondrous natural phenomena: Thingvellir plain, where the European and American continents meet, Geysir with the bubbling and spouting hot springs and the beautiful waterfalls Gulfoss. You could also consider a day trip to the unique Vestmanna islands.
Day 4-7
On the fourth day you fly to Kulusuk and continues by helicopter to Tasiilaq. As the helicopter approaches East Greenland, the landscape changes dramatically. The ice pops out on the sea, the east coast mountain formations tower into the sky and suddenly you get a glimpse of a few houses in the middle of a rough and rugged nature. The helicopter flight from Kulusuk to Tasiilaq gives a fantastic impression of the very unspoiled landscape. One senses quickly that thie is one of the most isolated areas in the world. The area boasts Tasiilaq (also known as Ammassalik) surrounded by five small settlements. The Tasiilaq area invites both to lovely walks in the beautiful landscape with Arctic flower meadows and a surprisingly lush vegetation and relaxation in the serene surroundings. Traditions are very much alive, which is particularly evident in the crafts that are so special to East Greenland. Accommodation takes place at Hotel Ammassalik for the next four nights. On the fifth day there is a guided trek to the flower valley, which lies just behind Tasiilaq, but otherwise the day in Tasiilaq is you own.
Day 8-9
By helicopter you head back to Kulusuk, where you stay two nights at Hotel Kulusuk, which is located near the airport, but outside the settlement of Kulusuk. The first day offers a jeep trip on the island, while the second day takes you on a visit to the small settlement of around 300 inhabitants. The settlement on the tiny rocky island is beautifully surrounded by icebergs and the sea with its characteristic sharp rocks in the background. It can hardly be more pristine – this is indeed a world of its own.
Day 10-11
On the 10th day you go back by plane to Iceland and another night at Guesthouse Borgartun. Enjoy one of Reykjavik's beautiful restaurants in the evening.
It is hard to get around the Blue Lagoon with the 37-39 ° hot and mineralized salt water, so we visit the natural bath on the 11th day on our way to the airport. The water in the blue lagoon looks almost unnaturally with the amazing blue color created by white silicon and sulfur. It is the perfect way to say farewell to Iceland! From here we drive to the airport and fly home.
