Many Greenlandic towns have had both Danish and Greenlandic names. Today, mainly Greenlandic names are used in Greenland. Here is a list of the old Danish names. They often appear on older maps:
Municipalities (Kommunea) Ammassalik is the name of the municipality, but the town is named Tasiilaq. However, the town was also named Angmagssalik until 1992.
Qaanaaq is the name of the town but the municipality is named Avanersuaq
All other municipalities are named after the town but with a “–p” in the genitive form, e.g. Nuup Kommunea or Narsap Kommunea
