EXCURSIONS RECOMMENDED

Ilulissat-vasticebergsandgreatideas!

Ilulissat is situated near the famous Ilulissat Icefiord where huge icebergs breaks of from the Inland Icecap and starts their journey to the sea. Ilulissat is however much more. A visit to Ilulissat is an adventure from another world.

Day 1, Friday - flight from Copenhagen to Greenland
Departure from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq where you land around 10:00 AM, change planes and fly on to Ilulissat where you will land around noon. On the trip from Kangerlussuaq to Ilulissat you will get a taste of the unique landscape as you fly right above the impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ilulissat Icefjord.

Check in at Hotel Arctic****. The hotel will be your home away from home for the next three days. It is known for its high level of service, beautiful rooms, excellent restaurants with a beautiful view of Ilulissat and the enormous icebergs of the Disko Bay.

Days 1-3, Friday-Sunday - unique activities
There are plenty of unique activities during these 3 days:

Cultural sightseeing in Ilulissat
You will see Greenland in a different light after this sightseeing trip in the town of Ilulissat. You will hear about the history of the area, Greenlandic culture and modern life 350 kilometers north of the Polar Circle. We visit the fishermen on the harbor, the meat and fish market place (called “Kalaaliaraq”, the little Greenlander), The Town Museum (the childhood home of Knud Rasmussen) and the old Zion’s Church.

Lecture about dogs
There are more than 4,000 dogs in Ilulissat! This gives you an indication of the importance of the dogsled even in modern society. The sled dogs are used both in connection with work and leisure. You get to feed dogs – and get to see, touch and especially hear 20 dogs howling at the same time.

Hiking to the settlement of Sermermiut
The many beautiful icebergs of Ilulissat Icefjord tower over the old settlement of Sermermiut. Through 4,000 years, Inuit people have lived at the settlement. You will hear about the life and customs of the Inuit before the arrival of the Europeans. Se the old remains of the Inuit houses and enjoy the incredible view of the icefjord.

Boat trip to the Icefjord
Throughout the year, around 20 million tons of ice breaks of the Ilulissat Glacier into the Icefjord. This results in enormous icebergs which tower up to 100 meters (300 feet) up into the air. On this boat trip, you get a chance to sail among them.

Aurora Borealis event
We will take a short hike under the northern lights and you will hear about this unique and beautiful phenomenon. The lecture will cover both scientific research and the old Greenlandic myths. When we get back to the hotel, we will be served ‘Greenlandic Coffee’.

Dogsled trip to Oqaatsut
Before the helicopter arrived in Greenland, dogsleds were the only means of transportation between the towns and settlements in Greenland in the wintertime. The old dogsled route between Ilulissat and Oqaatsut is still used every year, taking you over hills and bays.

Day 4, Monday - departure for Copenhagen
Departure for Copenhagen via Kangerlussuaq. Arrival in Copenhagen in the early evening.
