This guided tour of this town 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, with its remarkable history and culture will give you an insight into the old and new Greenland. Hike to the old settlement Sermermiut - WOG02
Ilulissat Sermermiut – hiking trip to the settlement on the ice fiord. The ancient settlement of Sermermiut, 1.5 km south of the town is surrounded by Ilulissat’s beautiful icebergs. Various different Inuit cultures have lived here over the past 4,000 years, and you can still see remains from ancient times. Learn about local history and customs before Europeans arrived. See plots settled for thousands of year and admire the views across the majestic icebergs.

A hike along the icefiord - WOG04
All year round around 20 million tons of ice flow out into icefiord from Ilulissat polar glacier every day. This ice is transformed into huge icebergs that stretch up to 100 metres above the water. At the mouth of icefiord these giant icebergs strand on an underwater moraine. We will also pass the old settlement Sermermiut on the hike.

Midnight sailing among icebergs - WOG08
The light of the midnight sun casts a unique glow on the icebergs, which draws people back again and again. We go very close to the icebergs, whose sheer magnitude can appear quite daunting. The midnight trip is an experience like no other. Remember to bring warm clothing and extra film for your camera.

Sailing among icebergs - WOG09

Excursion to the settlement Ilimanaq - WOG10
Barely a generation ago most of the Greenland population lived in the numerous tiny villages, dotted along the coast like a string of pearls. Today most people live in towns. However Ilulissat still has four thriving villages. One of these is Ilimanaq (Claushavn), which lies south of icefiord. Ilimanaq has many beautiful old colonial buildings and is famous for its excellent trout, caught in Tasiusaq fiord beyond the village.
Many hikers are attracted by the superb hiking trails around here and often camp in the area for a night or two.

Sailing to Oqaatsut/Rodebay - WOG11
For hundreds of years, Oqaatsut (Rodebay) was a stopover place for Dutch whalers, who dragged the huge whales onto land here in the old village. The village, which lies in a beautiful natural setting just 15 km north of Ilulissat, has a mere 50 inhabitants, its own school, church, shop and a single restaurant “H8”, which serves an excellent lunch in the old colonial building. You can combine a visit to Oqaatsut with a hike to or from Ilulissat, sailing just one way.

One day boat trip to Eqi - the calving glacier WOG12
The Eqi glacier which runs into the fjord, 80 km north of Ilulissat is one of the most beautiful places in Greenland. You can get close to the edge of the glacier by boat and see the calving process. The sound of the active glacier is quite remarkable while the sight of icebergs toppling into the water is breathtaking. The trip to Eqi is by modern and comfortable tourist boat. A good lunch and other refreshments are served.

Dog feeding and sledlife - WOG13
The winter is sledge time in Ilulissat. Around 5,000 sledge dogs provide transport for business and pleasure here. The long line fishermen use them to ferry fish from the icefiord to Ilulissat. On this trip you get to feed and stroke a team of dogs if you like. Twenty starving dogs barking as they await their meal is a sight and sound to behold. Dog owners provide a demonstration with sledge, reins and whip and explain all about dog sledge life.

Helicopter to the Ilulissat Glacier - WOG 23
We take off from Ilulissat Airport in the legendary Sikorsky helikopter. The flight takes us to the protected area around the Ilulissat ice cap. Mountain tops and lakes in all colors appear together with gigantic icebergs.
The Ilulissat area is a UNESCO World Heritage sight recoqnized for its unique beauty.
We land with a magnificient view to the inland ice cap, the icefjord and the many gigantic icebergs. We take a break from the flight for approximately half an hour. On the flight back we fly at low altitude giving us a close look at the floating icebergs. An unforgettable sight!

Whale safari in the Disco Bay - WOG26
The beautiful whales are swimming around the Diskobay all summer, sometimes close to the town, other times in the Icefiord or up north at the coast of the island “Arveprinsens Ejland”.
We have constant radio contact to the fishermen and hunters sailing in the Diskobay, and they are our source to information on the whereabouts of the whale. Most of the whales we see on our trips are the Humpback whales with their distinctive tails, but also Fin whales and Minke whales are often seen.

Ice Camp Eqi - WOG 40/41
Eqi glacier is situated 90 kilometres north of Ilulissat – a fantastic place where the glacier ends and calves in the sea. You will be staying in one of our 20 m2 big cabins, all comfortable equipped as double rooms with single or double beds with toilet, a sofa with the opportunity for an extra bed, and a porch from where you have the view to the glacier. For cold nights each cabin is also equipped with a heater. The 40 m2 restaurant Café Victor named by the famous Frenchman Paul Emil Victor, has room for 24 guest.

Hike to lagoon, glacier and moraine - WOG42
From the huts we hike around the small lagoon at the southern end of the glacier. There are often large flocks of geese in the lagoon in the breeding season. The trip goes further up the moraine where we can look down into the enormous cracks in the glacier few meters away from us. From here we will also get an overview of a large part of the 70m high glacier front and we will see the impressive calvings from the glacier.

Hike to and on the Inland Ice - WOG43
A long hike with great variation which takes us through several landscape types; vigorous lowland, wind-swept highland, moraines and last but not least the inland ice with its crevasses, rivers and wells. In the last valley before the icecap we enjoy our lunch before we climb the moraine and see the spectacular view of the ice cap. We hike on the ice for about 3 kilometres and see deep crevasses, and rivers ending in large wells. After a long day with a great experience we return to the Ice Camp Eqi for a well deserved dinner.

"Around The World" in one hour - WOG17
It is called the popular sledge track which lies between the airport, Ilulissat and the hill "Akinnaq". We ride along the hill around the lakes. Take the tour to get the true feeling of sledding. The ride is not hard on the back.

The 'viewpoint' by the icefjord (one sled) - WOG14
The mouth of icefiord is an impressive sight in both summer and winter. This two-hour sleigh ride takes you on a 7-km journey across the hills of Lille Akinnaq to a beautiful observation point. The trip crosses the undulating terrain with a team of dogs at the front and back of the sleigh acting as engine and brakes when you go up and down hill. Not recommended for anyone with serious back problems.

Sledride to the settlement Oqaatsut - WOG15
Nalluarsuk is a small side fjord to Kangia – Ilulissat icefiord, and has seawater ice most of the winter. The trip takes us across Store Akinnaq, till we are in sight of Nalluarsuk, which offers far-reaching views over the great polar glacier. From here we drive down onto the ice and experience a dog sleigh ride between icebergs. If the seawater ice is secure, the journey back will take us across icefiord to Aallaaniarfik.
Not recommended for anyone with serious back problems.

2 day dog sled trip to Nunatarsuaq - WOG16
If you fancy feeling the force of an Arctic winter, this trip is for you. We leave the sleigh trail and head for Aattartoq, where we come fact to face with sea ice. From there we head out to the fishing points where long line fishermen perform one of the toughest jobs in the world.
You get a taste of the atmosphere amongst these small groups of hard-bitten men as they haul up Greenland halibut from the deep. From the fishing points, we drive across to Nunatarsuaq, an island north of Ilulissat icefiord. Here, the most beautiful sleigh trail in Ilulissat takes us to the tiny branch fiord, Kangerlukasik, where we camp for the night.
On day two we head back to the town between the icebergs in icefiord.
Not recommended for anyone with serious back problems.

3 day sledride to and on the inland ice - WOG20
Few people will ever have the opportunity to stand on more than one square kilometre of ice, but you can experience that on our 3 days sledge-ride.
The first day will be the same as in “A two-days sledge-ride to Nunatarsuaq”.
The second day we will go along the edge of Nunatarsuq and turn east on the inland ice after 2-3 hours. After 2-3 kilometres on the inland ice we will have our lunch while enjoying the view to ice, ice and more ice. On our way back we go on the sea-ice towards the ”dead” glacier until we reach two small cabins. Here we will spend the night in the cabins or in tents.
The third day we go home over Aattartoq.

Dogsled expedition - WOG22
10 days in the north Greenlandic winter paradise with 12-16 hard working dogs and a hunter. It is the great adventure. The journey includes fishing and hunting if you wish to try it and extreme work and cold.
This winter the journey goes north to the famous glacier "Eqip Sermia". The sea ice on the Disko bay has been absent the last 5-7 years which is why we have chosen this route which can be completed every winter. The route crosses big fiords where the ice is good and solid.
