Tour9091:UltimaThule-cruisetothenorthernmostNorth!

An amazing Thule cruise including the beautiful Disko Bay

NB: ONLY ONE DEPARTURE

Ultima Thule is a unique 15-day cruise that takes you to the northernmost part of Greenland. If you are adventurous, this is your chance of a lifetime to experience the more remote parts of Greenland where the population lives in close cohesion with nature with deep roots in the more traditional Greenlandic lifestyle. And then there is something very special to go on a cruise where you do not just follow in the wake of other vessels, and where the entire northernmost coastline of Greenland in all its glory with its wildlife, landscape and endless horizon reveals itself to you!

Day program

Day 1
After arrival to Kangerlussuaq the ship's guides welcome you. There is transport to the port where the Zodiacs sail us out to Fram. In the evening we sail out through Kangerlussuaq, meaning the long fjord. During the evening and night we travel the 180 kilometers out through the fjord before the course is set northwards along the coast in the morning.

Day 2
First stop on the trip is Sisimiut, which with its 5200 inhabitants is Greenland's second largest town. It is the northernmost town with an ice-free port throughout the year and the southernmost town of sled dogs. Here we get the opportunity to explore a little and enjoy the many beautiful houses and hilly landscape.

Day 3
Today the ship continues out into the Disko Bay, where the first icebergs appear. We land in Qeqertarsuaq on the Disko Island, which in the old days was the center of whaling. Qeqertarsuaq is surrounded by exciting layered basalt mountains of volcanic origin. There is time to walk around the town and it is also possible to make a hiking trip in the fascinating hinterland with lush vegetation.

Day 4
Uummannaq island with its distinctive heart-shaped mountain is located in the middle of the fjord, and when we get closer Uummannaq town pops up with colorful houses at the foot of the mountain. During the trip around the town it is possible to visit a turf hut and the magnificent stone church. Furthermore, you can go on an excursion to Santa's house.

Day 5
As we follow the coast northward, we come into the region, which marks the northern limit of human habitation. In these harsh and remote areas ma struggles man constantly against nature to sustain life. The day is spent at sea as we cross Melville Bay. On board Greenland-related lectures will be held .

Day 6
Today we reach Dundas - Knud Rasmussen's old and now abandonned commercial station. Although the indigenous population has lived in the Dundas area for nearly 1000 years, the settlement itself was first founded by Arctic explorer in 1910.

Day 7
Coming closer to the North Pole, we reach our next port, which is the district's northernmost village, and our most northerly port of call. The small community of Siorapaluk was founded in 1933 and located in the middle of an incredibly beautiful landscape, where locals live by hunting seals, walrus, fox and arctic hare. The few residents in Siorapaluk have few modern facilities. You will find a shop, telephones, a combined school and church and a public library. Sometimes the children come and visit us on board.

Day 8
The plan of this day is to continue as far north as possible, hoping to reach 80 ° latitude north. This will depend on ice conditions, while sailing along the ice edge, which determines how far north it is possible to get.

Day 9
The Qaanaaq name which means 'the High North' causes the essence of the character of this remote place. This is the midnight sun's kingdom originally colonized by Inuits from the west. Here hunting of seal, whale and polar bear remains an important part of life for local people. You have the opportunity to visit the Knud Rasmussen Museum, located in the house which was the polar researcher's home or to take a look at the local church where the Christ figure is depicted with socks on - because of the cold!

Day 10
Once again we head south enjoying the sight of the incredible nature. As we quietly pass the countryside, experts on board will complement the fantastic impression from the trip with a series of lectures on history, culture, nature and wildlife in the polar regions.

Day 11
We reach Upernavik, which means the spring's place.  A stroll among the 200 year old buildings in what actually is the world's northernmost open-air museum, will reveal a rich cultural history from both the colonists and the Inuit side.

Day 12
The cruise continues through the narrow Vaigat Strait, and in the evening we reach one of the trip's highlights, the calving glacier Eqi. The glacier stretches approx. 5 km across the fjord like a giant wall of ice that calves directly into the sea. There will be a barbecue evening with gorgeous full-view of the glacier.

Day 13
This whole day is devoted to a stay in the town of Ilulissat, which is neighbour to the impressive Kangia ice fjord. There is an opportunity to participate in various excursions, such as walking to the old settlement Sermermiut at the icefjord, sailing with small boats to the mouth of the icefjord or going on a helicopter ride over the icy Kangia fjord.

Day 14
Early afternoon we reach the small settlement Itilleq, located on an island surrounded by tall majestic mountains and glaciers. In the settlement about 130 people live who will welcome you with various activities. Enjoy the chance to get an insight into life in a small settlement.

Day 15
MS Fram has come back to its starting point and anchors in Kangerlussuaq fjord and in the morning you leave the ship. During the day you will by bus be taken to the inland ice. Late in the afternoon a picnic is organized at Lake Ferguson. Departure to Copenhagen late in the evening.
